Today is DS's first day of school. I can't believe they go back to school this early in IN. The move from PA to IN caused him to miss almost a whole month of summer! I am nervous because of the new school. He's all ready to go! I really hope he enjoys his new school. Just wanted to share my nervousness since I can't project it onto him since he's so excited! I just can't believe my baby's in the second grade. OK, now I am getting weepy! He will have a great time!

Hi LD.

Wow, that IS an early start! Perhaps he will get out in May instead of June then?

He's still very young. I wouldn't worry about him too much. They make friends so much easier at that age. I think it could be much harder for him if he were older. Take a deep breath and relax. I'm sure he'll be fine! His being excited is proof! :)

Being a PE teacher - I LOVE the second graders!! They are my favorites! They have such a joy for learning and playing - it is the best grade!! It must be tough to let him go, but it will be great. He is at such a great age of wonder and willingness to learn everything.

What are you going to do today? Keep yourself busy!!

I am a grade 2 reading teacher, and I love this age!!!!!!!!! Kids love school, and they love making friends.

I am sure he will do fine, and he will love his teachers and classmates!

My DS starts kindergarten on Monday, the 13th. From my experiences, KY and IN schools have always started in August. I have no idea why when so many other states start much later. However the school system tries to schedule school to be out the end of May. However that rarely happens due to snow days pushing them into June most years. If it were up to me, I would prefer my kids to go on a year-round schedule so there wouldn't be so much reteaching of things they learned the previous year.

I'm sure your son will do great in school and make lots of friends. It is probably harder on you than him.

They started 8/3 here in south GA - get out the end of May. My 2 oldest started band camp the middle of July though - Not much summer vacation anymore! My youngest is in 1st grade. She cries every morning:( She likes school but would rather stay home with mom - I would rather her stay home with mom , too.;-) Marnie

I feel your nervousness! My little boy starts kindergarten next week, and while I'm SO excited for him, I feel like he's growing up SO fast. Seems like yesterday he was pulling out all of my pots and pans and giving clanky concerts in the kitchen for me all day long. Now he's going to be gone all day long. If kindergarten is this hard, what will college be like??? But regardless of my aprehension, it is so magical seeing this being grow into such an amazing person! And I am so proud that he is about to embark on this wonderful journey of learning...

Wow that is early. Usually, they start early in the August in the South and more towards end of August early Sept. in the North. This year is different though. Last year, school started here Aug. 14 but this year it doesn't start until Aug. 27. But what is really strange is that they only end up going one week later at the end of the year. How do you start out two weeks earlier but end only one week later. Wouldn't they be missing one week of school then? Oh well, whatever. I have noticed things flip-flopping this year with the North and South, I wonder why? All the kids on my street are so ready for school since this summer ended up being two weeks longer. I don't know what I am going to do with myself now that both of my kids will be in school this year. They grow up so fast!!!

I'm guessing the reason for ending school only a week later, even though they started 2 weeks later, would probably be a smaller number of in service days. Maybe they lessened the number of days the kids had off for holidays too. That is odd though.
