was diagnosed with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency in my 30's and began to gain weight due to the symptoms (shortness of breath, fatigue, swollen ankles, pressure point aches). Had my son a year later and was diagnosed with postpartum depression. I was then put on several medications that caused rapid weight gain and quickly became overweight which then aggravated my Alpha-1 symptoms. My doctor ordered me to lose weight in order to breathe, but gave me no guidance, other than a diabetic diet, to do so. I did my best to quickly learn about good nutrition (something I was never taught, as I grew up underweight and was encouraged to eat fatty foods in order to gain weight) and began walking (all I could do physically at the time). It took over 5 years but I lost the weight. Fast forward to 2 years ago...I was diagnosed with food allergies (along with my son). Once again I was faced with nutritional challenges!
