Can you eat portabella mushrooms raw? DH made a salad tonight and sliced raw portabella mushrooms in the salad. I am sure I ate a few before I knew what he put in it:rolleyes: I know a lot of mushrooms are poisonous when eaten raw. I think DH is trying to kill me:p:eek:

Thanks in advanced!

Thanks Melissa for your reply! I have never eating them raw, I was worried. I surged the web, they all sad you have to cook them first.

Thanks again!

Yes, you definitely can eat them raw. Quite a few raw-food recipe books include recipes for them, like using them as 'buns' for burgers, or marinating them: I like to marinate them in Nama Shoyu soy sauce, lemon juice and some fresh rosemary for about 20 minutes, then slice and eat.

By the way, I've seen the name spelled portAbellA, portObellO, portAbellO (and probably portObellA as well!). Which one is it, really? Or is there no concensus?

Not to mention "portobellini"

Kathryn, some websites say, you can eat them raw and some say eating raw mushrooms is not good for you as they contain an indigestable protein.

I've checked out these links, and I'm not quite sure what they are supposed to prove.

There's no reliable info there that says raw mushrooms in general are bad. The first link has a lot of people coming up with info they're not sure about, or hypothsizing, with no actual facts, and the one knowlegeable-sounding person is refering to some very specific mushroom types.

The second link also refers to some specific types of mushrooms as being dangerous to eat raw. In fact, it goes on to say "You can serve impeccably safe mushrooms raw, sliced in salads or topped with a drizzle of olive or truffle oil."
