Manmakers!! (kettlebell)

Cathlete
Good Morning!!

I have a kettlebell question/confirmation about the Manmaker workout on the Empire State dvd....

I am planning on doing this workout for the first time this week. Am I correct in thinking I should be using a heavier kettlebell(s) for this workout?

TIA:)

Hi Deanie.

I read this but did not answer initially because I don't KNOW the answer so I didn't want to give you false information.

I did the man maker work out and used either a 15 or 20# bell. It's all I had. That being said, as a rule, when I do bell work I naturally try to use the heaviest bell possible for my strength/ability and depending upon what I have. I don't have the array of weight in kettlebells that I do in dumbells so sometimes the weight isn't what I'd truly prefer to use.

HTH :)

Thanks Wendy ~ I'm still trying to figure out which workouts are more cardio and need a lighter weight and which are more weight intensive and need a heavier weight. I haven't done the workout yet (though I watched it), and I'm not sure if its more cardio or weights.

I do The Empire State with a 25#kb, so I think I will try the manmaker with a 25# also.

Thanks!

I actually have a few work outs that I definately consider to be more cardio then strength simply because I just CAN'T even get through all of the moves with a 15# bell! I just ordered a 10# bell for those and can't wait to get it and try it out. I say go as heavy as you can. If you have to lighten up then you know your answer. ;)

Good Idea! I think that will be my rule of thumb for now:)

I'm actually think I should maybe backtrack a little and get the Enter the Kettlebell dvd/video and workbook!! I think I am missing stuff by jumping right in.... but I love the AOS workouts!:)

Let me know what you think of Enter the Kettlebell if you decide to get it. I asked for Newport and Firepower for Christmas. I hope to get one of them. I don't truly expect to get both since they are so pricey. I already have a goodly collection of bell work outs so it's not as I don't have enough to keep me busy for a while! :D

I will keep you posted! :)

I have both Newport(gift) and Firepower from the latest sale, but I am ascared to try them!!LOL So I am starting with Providence and the empire State first!:)

What kb dvds do you have?

I have:

Kettlebell Your Way to a Perfect Body (Providence Remake)
KBYW 2 Empire State
The Extreme Kettlebell Cardio Work out (Keith Weber)
The Kettlebell Goddess Work Out (Andrea DuCane)
Sgt Shanahan's Kettlebell Boot Camp (Ryan Shanahan)
Iron Core Way Volumes 1 & 2 (Sarah Lurie) *these are the work outs I started with*
Ultimate Body Sculpt and Conditioning with Kettlebells (Lauren Brooks)

Wow, you do have a good collection.

At some point I would like to get the Keith Weber dvd, but it looks really intense so I am going to wait!:)

I just did The Empire State today, I feel its not as intense as Providence. Is it just me, or do you feel that way too?

PS~ we used to vacation in Beach Haven (LBI):) Are you from around there? I'm originally from Cherry Hill

In all fairness I can't compare Empire State to KBYW yet. I only did ES once and I was just coming off being sick so I wasn't putting as much into it as I would if I were at 100%. I did like it alot though. I liked the way it it hit upper/lower and core in every round. :)

Keith's work out is INSANE but AWESOME! It came highly recommended to me and I will highly recommend it to YOU! It's very versatile as it is broken up into several segments that are all about 10 minutes a piece so you can mix and match them if you don't want to do the entire work out at once. I personally have never attempted the entire w/o at once cause just half of it kicks my butt somethin' fierce! I'll have to try it one day though. Perhaps I'll go lighter in bell weight to make it more doable. :)

I am about an hour north of LBI in Monmouth County. I grew up in Middlesex County though. I only moved here after I got married almost 6 years ago.

If you are thinking of getting Enter the Kettlebell, you might want to think about getting Coach Sonnon's Official Kettlebell Foundation Dvds.
http://www.rmaxinternational.com/KBF/

As the title said, it is a foundation dvd but you will be surprised to what you can pick up from the dvds. There are techniques which I have not seen in other tutorial dvds. There is also 3 different breathing methods which turned out to be so beneficial.
I have quite a collection of kettlebell dvds from AOS to Steve Cotters to Pavel"s and I would say these 3 dvds are worth the money spent on them. However, to note, this is not a workout dvd except for the warm up and cool down dvds which you could use them everyday on their own.

I was actually skeptical about how good they can be. Now that I have them, I would say it is a must have. Also take a look at Sonnon's Flowfit programme. It is very interesting.

It looks interesting, especially his cooldown (many KB workouts don't even have a cooldown). I like the idea of three different breathing techniques as well.

I am puzzled, though, by his looking down when doing swings. That's pretty much a 'don't do' in KB circles, because it greatly increases the risk of rounding the back. Makes me wonder about the rest of his form instruction.

Okay, back from work (I'm a teacher) and I got a very nice visa gift card :D :D :D

Off to buy Keith Webbers dvd!! (thanks Wendy), and etk! and possibly a bulldog kettlebell....I think instead of getting doubles, this may be the way to go!

Shellynfree: I have to check out the link- thanks :) I usually am better following a dvd though....

You will be greatly surprised by what you can learn from him. The swing is not like what you would imagine it to be done by most. He breaks it down to many components. You will find that you won't get much strain/injury after following it through with him. What I really like about the dvds are the depth he went to explain each movement even to the minute execution part. Also on top of that you get to learn all the mobility moves starting from the top (head) right down to the toes. Don't think you can get that anywhere. His mobility workout is also very different from the functional mobility exercises you get out there. Very unique and very doable. The benefit of just doing that outweighs the cost of the dvds.

I was really skeptical when I was introduced to them. However, the guy who told me about them is RKC certified too so I took his advice. The price is not cheap but it opens you to a new dimension in exercising. I just previewed and done part of his flowfit exercises. Very impressive. Intu-flow is harder to master though because we lack his joint flexibility. See this independent link on how he sees flowfit. http://johnsifferman.com/blog/?p=316

Go google on him in youtube on flowfit, intu-flow etc.

P.S. I forgot to add - the explanations on the dvds seemed to be long but once you master the moves, it takes less than 15 mins to do them ( warm up and cool down).

So far just Webers dvd. I hope to get it next week.

My brother has a bid for ETK dvd/workbook on ebay and he's going to buy the AOS workbook that compliments it. He said he'd share with me, so I'm not buying that.:)

I am also thinking of the ropes:eek: since I got ropes gone wild for free when I ordered Santa Monica (not even thinking of trying yet!)

I think I'm going to lay low a while with the purchases and really think about what I want. I tend to be an impulse shopper and I'm trying to change!LOL;)

I really have so many questions about kettlebells, when to use what weights/sizes and how to use them on consecutive days and whats best to do on days not using the kettlebells. I really need to get to a RKC instructor, but the place by me isn't open for another 10 days, they are opening 2009.

Okay, quite a book for the one question you asked!!LOL:eek:
Have a great day!

Deanie,

I haven't even LOOKED at Santa Monica....YET! LOL We will see what I get for Christmas first. I asked for Newport and Firepower. My 10# bell has been shipped. I should have it on Monday. :) So now I'll have a 10#, two 15#'s, a 20# and a 30#! Good grief! ;):D:p

Enjoy the holidays!:)

PS what is a bulldog kettlebell anyway???

ooohh! I hope you get Newport (gift) and Firepower (from the 12 day sale) keep me posted. I have them both but haven't done them yet.

You have a nice collection. I have a 20,25 and 30. I had a coupon for Dicks sporting goods and so I got a 35. Probably should have got another 20, but couldn't seem to stop myself!!:p The kb's are so addicting!!

The bulldog kettlebell is on the AOS website. It is hollow and you fill it up with shot or sand to the weight you want. I figured instead of buying double kettlebells it might be cost effective to go this way instead. Not sure, and they are alot of money, so I want to make sure before I buy. Also, I like the orange color, but they only come in pink or steel now....

Enjoy the holidays...I hope Santa is nice to you;) and brings many kb dvds!!
