State Fair Foods

Well the State Fair of Texas opened today and the news has been showing the latest food items for sale. The #1 was chicken fried bacon. Another one that seems very popular is called "Fire and Ice" It is fried pineapple with strawberries topped with liquid nitrogen frozen whip cream. Others on the list are fried banana split, fried jelly beans, fried grilled cheese sandwiches and fried s'mores.

So if any of you are interested in a short cut to a heart attack, come on down to the State Fair of Texas. I wonder if it is even safe to eat foods frozen by way of liquid nitrogen. Isn't that what you remove warts with?

I might have to make a trip to TX for fried s'mores. That sounds tasty. The rest of it sounds like a belly ache. Why would you fry perfectly good truffles? What a waste of quality chocolates!

Oh my GOD! Fair Food is THE BEST! Several years ago a co-worker and I hit the Ohio State Fair and we did, indeed, eat our way from one end of the fairway to the other. So much clever and interesting stuff to put in your mouth.

What, no deep-fried candy bars this year?

That all sounds just nasty! Is there some kind of contest between vendors to see who can kill someone the fastest?

Some traditional fair foods--corn dogs, onion rings, cotton candy---sound almost healthy compared to these inventions.

I'm pretty sure that's how most frozen pizzas (and maybe some other frozen foods) are prepared (at least that's what the doctor who froze off some warts for me told me once).

I'm sorry but I don't think I could eat any of that without getting immediately sick. :( I even wanted a funnel cake and a lemonade at a fair before and that made me sick. The funnel cake was greasy and the lemonade was so loaded with sugar it was nasty.

Same here (and I was looking for a green-cheeked, nauseated smilie to add to my first post, kind of like the "embarassed" guy, but with green instead of red) but none was available!

The Minnesota state fair was in August and one the new items this year was chocolate dipped bacon! I can't believe how many things they can put on a stick and deep fry:eek:

Ok was just gonna say that fried bacon from Texas actually sounds awesome. I just can't help it , I love some great junk food every now and then. I will admit, I would have to bust out some serious antacids!

But the chocolate covered bacon, that's just very very wrong.

Hey Jean! I distinctly remember you posting this EXACT SAME thing last year! :):):) Although last year the hot item was a deep fried OREO! My dear.....you need to come to PA to try out our ice cream place that has 24 different flavors of soft serve ice cream! LOL

Gimme a good old-fashioned state fair corn dog anyday. For some reason, they just don't taste the same anywhere else.

I do have to admit that I threw up in my mouth a little when I read about the Texas Fried Jelly Bellies. Gag!

Not exactly a State or County Fair, but...

At the Annual Punkin Chunkin out on the Eastern Shore, I always treat myself to a pumpkin funnel cake. Best...fair food...ever.

Didn't the Texas State Fair also debut the now-famous Fried Coca Cola?? Those Texans know their way around a deep fryer!

Gayle,

I remember that last year's fair food included what they called Fried Coke. I did try that one. It was like fried donut holes with a coke like syrup poured over, topped with whipped cream. It was not to my liking. This year I'm interested in trying several (the Fire and Ice, the chicken fried bacon and the fried s'mores) but since we only go to the fair on one day, I don't think it would be in my best interest to try all of those on the same day. There's always next year, LOL.

You know what I always say? Give it to US. We'll batter it, fry it and dip in in ranch dressing. We're AMERICANS, dammit, and that's just how we roll...

I also think we should put ice cream on it, and frequently.

Reminiscing about the South and its love affair with the deep fryer reminded me of my passion for fried dill pickles. I apologize if this is a little off topic.

Hill's Cafe in Austin has a sort of salad plate (its Texas, so its a plate of fried salad, of course) that includes fried green tomatoes, fried dill pickles, fried okra and hush puppies. Followed by their peach bread pudding, which is made with donuts. Round Rock Donuts. Mmmm...

OK, I live in Texas but if I ate any of fried stuff I would be violently ill. For a week. LOL!

Hmmm, maybe that's why I chose to go to the Greek Food Festival in Dallas yesterday rather than than the State Fair. Give me a greek meatball over fried bacon anyday! Oh, but must confess--I did have ZERO will power and bought a box of Greek pastries to take home and yes, that included baklava and cookies...Did Boot Camp this morning though, in an effort to make room for those calories coming this morning when I eat one of those with a cup of coffee...Bliss.

ya know i am good with just a slushie, cotton candy and maybe a hot dog. can't do deep fried stuff like that. i remember when they started doing fried oreos. thats just really scary sounding.

We had the Okra Strut this weekend, complete with fried okra. This festival is always before The State Fair in October. I did well, had unsweetened tea and fried okra. Meanwhile, Dave and kids had corn dogs, bbq sandwiches, etc.
