Golfers -- Any golf fitness DVD recommendations?

I took up golfing about a year ago and love it (most of the time). Yep, I have lots of mis-hits right now. Am taking some lessons with a PGA professional. Wondering if anyone has any golf fitness DVD recommendations.

Thanks for any help.

Jeanette:)

LOL, everyone must be out golfing. Only 3 views since 9:30 a.m. Interesting topic, huh?

My husband and I just starting golfing this summer. I think I could really like it. It's definitely a lot more expensive than our other activities. We play tennis and volleyball also, and once you buy your equipment, it's basically free. Not so with golf!

I don't have any recommendations for DVD's. But I think any weights and cardio you do have to help your golf game.

Jennifit, thanks for the links, I'll check them out.

Annie, I play at a local muni course. I buy a 12 play card (18 holes) and am able to split it into 9 holes for a cost of around $8 per 9 holes, so not too too bad. Heck, I spent a lot more on horses for 20 plus years. Finally got out of that. I think I am ahead of other beginners because of my regular workouts. I'm thinking that more stretching would help too.

I did order a couple DVD's from Collage Video: Fit for Golf, Fit for Life; and Power Golf Fitness. Looking forward to them.

Any other suggestions?

I took an opportunity to ask one of the LPGA players about her fitness program, as she said she had a new trainer that had helped her game a bunch, is consistently in the top 15 and she made a boatload more money than I did last year :D. She said the concentration was on core, core and more core strength. Personally, I have added 15 yards to my drive since weight training, but I still can't hit it straight!

I will be interested in hearing how you like the DVDs you purchased.

Melissa, I hit straight but not far. Isn't it always that way LOL? I'm also a cyclist and know that a strong core helps in that activity too. Seems to be at the heart of so many activities.

golf

I have been golfing a long time - funny, my husband is out golfing right now while I am looking at the forum! Anyway, I have found that total body weight training, lots of flexibility (I do Cathe's stretching DVDs at least twice a week) and core training have helped me a lot. In fact when I started doing weight training in earnest a year and half ago, my score dropped about 10 points, no kidding. Even I was surprised. Annika Sorenstam has a good book about her approach to golf - and there is a chapter on her fitness routine in there I would recommend. They have reported that Tiger Woods can bench press 300 pounds. Anyway, I would just say do it all, weights, cardio (5 hours is a long time to be walking around!), flexibility and abs/core. Golf requires everything to be in good order - though a lot of non golfers don't realize it!

Hi WTBF,
I'll have to check out Annika's book. I really need to address the flexibility issue. I wake up in the morning and my hips, back, etc. are stiff. A little walking around and I'm good to go. Yep, Tiger is buff all right, I'm always checking his guns. Actually, when I started golfing last year, I had so many aches and pains from hitting the ground hard with my club. Thought I had a tendonitis thing going in my elbow for a while. I swear, golf is the hardest sport I've ever pursued. I always was intrigued by it, but thought I'd pick it up when I got much older. I'll be 50 this year, but am hooked! Now, the tough part is balancing husband, work, cycling and now golf! Housework, what's that? I want to play tonite so I skipped the group bike ride this morning so I could help DH with a backyard project.

golf p.s.

I am 51. I really seem to have to stretch more and more - it seems like I am stiff a lot - but I do respond to stretching as I do it more often. I do have Cathe's Total Body Stretching and Stretch Max, and I love both for this. There is also a "Yoga for Golf" DVD I have but haven't tried yet. I also agree with you totally, golf is the most challenging sport I have ever tried. We won't discuss my handicap, ha ha ha!!! Forget the housework, go play a round :) If you saw my house right now, you'd know I adhere to that philosophy.

WTBF,
I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but your reply just reminded me that I usually take Monday's as a rest day from my rotation (will be starting Cathe's August rotation on Tuesday). I think that would be a great day to devote to stretching or yoga! Duh! I don't have Cathe's Stretch Max or the other one your mentioned, but I do have some Yoga DVD's.

that's funny.

I think anything that works your core would help.

Have you thought of Wii Golf for practice? It's a video game, but I've heard good things.

I'm so inconsistent that I haven't started posting my scores yet. I'm going to look up the Yoga for Golf DVD. Uh oh, I just snuck a look at those dishes piled on the counter from last night and thought, "Don't look, Ethyl" - from Ray Steven's song The Streak.
