Slow and Heavy Plie Squats

I just did the S & H Legs and Shoulders today and used 2 20 pound dumbbells for the plie squats, placing them at the top of my thighs. Is this a decent substitute for the 40 lb. big guy?
 
I just used a 40 lb barbell as the 20 pound dumbells were uncomfortable. Of course, the posture is harder to hold upright, but it's the best I can do with the equipment I have.
 
Both of those are great ideas!! My dumbells only go up to 20lbs also and i was wondering the same thing. I like the barbell idea also. I'm going to try both and see which I like best! Thanks guys!!
