Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 12/31/2023

Good morning. I’ve been really sick for the past few days, but feeling a little better today. The four of us that were here after oldest daughter flew in had mild sniffles, but when the grandchildren arrived they brought “school germs”. Friday I didn’t feel well and yesterday I was really sick. I went back to bed yesterday morning and slept 4.5 hours and last night I slept for 9 hours. I was very weak with coughing and runny nose. Had a lot of ginger tea and broth, but couldn’t eat anything else. Today I did Jane Adams Gentle Yoga, morning energy practice to loosen up my body.

So sorry Carolyn. viruses are the curse of grandchildren!. Kiddos come preloaded with viruses, all kinds. there is a huge amount circling around right now from all the travel and xmas visits. we have not been sick but seems like almost everyone we know has.... so we ended up with a quieter holiday than planned. take care and keep up with the warm liquids. so sorry this happened while your family is visiting.

I did another yard walk yesterday and cranked out several sets of curls and hammer curls mostly with 8 lb weights. I feel it a little today. I never did do presses on the bench. maybe today. went for a 35 minute walk around our yard yesterday. we have 5 acres with elevation gain and loss so its actually a decent workout. I can zig zag and circle around numerous ways in trees and out of them, so it's less boring than walking the road. ground is most shredded bark so its softer to walk on than asphalt or concrete. In only a couple days to my follow up appt with surgeon so I hope I'm released to do a lot more.

Yesterday I did the MMA Kickboxing/Boxing workout I put together and Disk 7, today I did Live For the Love of Cardio. I did not love this. It's mixed floor cardio with some drills and I just wasn't feeling it. Then I did the abs from KPC and Stretch Max 2 (stability ball.) This warm winter we're having means that there are still a lot of sandhill cranes here. I think the longest I've ever known them to be here was until mid-Decembre and it wasn't a lot. Since they sometimes start coming back mid-February maybe they just won't leave this year. As long as they can forage in the fields they're good.

Valerie I hope that you are released to do more at your appointment this week. We have a lot of reservations and casinos here, I've never seen any of them selling them to the public, though there are only a handful that I pass regularly. Tribal members can have what they want on tribal land though. I never understood the lure of casinos, but they certainly aren't hurting for business. I never heard anything yesterday or last night, but in general it's a 4th of July thing out here. Even then it's nothing like some places have to deal with.

Carolyn I'm sorry to hear you've been ill. I'm very thankful that with Nick flying in and Derek just back from school we came through it okay. I'm seeing so many people get sick after traveling.

Hi Judy and Diane Sue.

Happy New Year everyone. I worked 6 hours yesterday and did a 20 minute strength workout and 10 minutes of rowing last night. Today I did a 45 minute Peloton ride and plan on doing some strength/core work later.

Valerie-Great job with the walks and weight work. I hope you get released to do more after your appointment this week.

Cathy-Great job with MMA Kickboxing/Boxing, Disk 7, For the Love of Cardio and Stretch Max 2.

Carolyn-Hope you feel better this week.

Hi to Diane Sue

We did park walk this morning for 1 hr 22 minutes. again, very quiet, we were the only ones on the trails. this park has a campground. a number of vehicles, but we were early. no one was out yet. road goes by the grocery store, so got shopping done on the way home.

cathy I am completely amazed at how many people go to casinos. a lot of them older people who ( one would think) should know better. I cant think of anything I would less want to do! gambling is stupid and not fun, and if I want a glass of wine I'll have it at home. not sure if all states deal with the tribes the same way but they are one of the largest if not the largest business lobby in this state. they can do whatever they want.
fireworks noise was intense last night starting in the afternoon and going past midnight. with doors and windows shut its manageable. annoying.
we rented Oppenheimer last night. available on apple TV. despite all the fuss, I was so-so about it. I had read the sound track in theaters was WAY too loud and dialogue too soft. it was ok at home where we can adjust volume. its hard to get thrilled with movies where there is no one to like. at all. depressing. I thought I would enjoy it but I didn't. its 3 hrs long besides. a serious, well made movie but jumped around a lot and it's probably not possible to make the development of the first atomic bomb an uplifting thing.

so cool about the sand hills. they are some of the early spring arrivals in MT, we've heard them in march and for sure in april. If they have forage, no reason for them to leave.

I am so hoping I can start doing core work and more upper body work.

Good morning. I’m feeling a little better every day. Today I did a light workout, KCM’s Start Here, workout one. That was 33 minutes and 194 calories burned. My average heart rate was 127 and maximum heart rate was 176.

Have a nice day everyone.

small appliances suddenly dying. the instapot limped thru a simple thing today after beeping a bunch of error codes. its done this the last 2 weeks. I ordered a new one. my air fryer has been working poorly too. it comes on and looks fine but does not come up to temp. sits around 250 degrees. its my second one. Ive had it maybe a year and never felt it worked like it should but at least it heated. I checked it with a thermometer so it's toast too. nobody fixes anything anymore. both heading to the trash.

Today I did Live Quick Fix Cardio. Uses light weights and the high step topper. Then STS Disk 8 and STS 2 Total Body Stretch.

Valerie always nice to have quiet, empty trails. The cranes are at least 1/3 mile from us back in the fields and I can hear them in the basement. LOL Loud is their middle name! Sorry to hear you have appliances dying. Did you consider an IP/air fryer combo. I don't have an air fryer. Thought about the combo when I bought the IP, but I just know know how much I'd use the air fryer. I do know people who go to casinos just to dine or to stay at the hotel. Because they want to lure people in to gamble those are both often very affordable for the quality.

Carolyn glad to hear you are feeling better and got in a light workout!

Judy great job with the Peloton workout. I don't think I told you about my sisters adventure with paint at her Home Depot in FL. She got it out to the car, had put one can in and went to get the other out of the cart and realized in time that it was oozing out on her hand. From the bottom of the can. She tossed it back in the cart. She had JUST picked up her new car the day before so it would have been extra bad.

Hi Diane Sue.

Valerie, I hope your doctor gives you the go ahead on more activity. I keep having things break. My husband bought me a new food processor because my Cuisinart one's bowl cracked and would not lock in to run it. I had to hold it in place while running it. He got me another Cuisinart that is nice. I hope it holds up. I made a 7 inch sugar free cheesecake Saturday using the Insta Pot. It is pretty easy to make a cheesecake in the Insta Pot. I would miss mine if something happened to it. I make a lot of soups in it and it is great for a big pot of chili for family dinner when we get together. Also used it for spaghetti sauce and it was easy to keep it warm till ready for the pasta when everyone arrived.

Carolyn, KCM Start Here sounds like a good choice to get in some movement. It takes a bit after so much going on. Cooking and entertaining for a group takes a lot of energy.

Judy, nice job on the 20 minute strength workout and 10 minutes of rowing and yesterday's 45 minute Peloton ride.

Cathy, nice work on Live Quick Fix Cardio and STS disc 8 and STS 2 Total Body Stretch. Wow, on the paint leaking from the bottom. That would have been a catastrophe for sure.

diane sue I'm a cuisinart veteran. I bought one when they first came out . it lasted at least 10-15 years, then I went to a smaller one that I loved. I had extra bowl so I could use it for multiple things even if bowl #1 was dirty. I ended up buying extra bowls for all of them. most pieces are available separately.
bowls from cuisinart and I would guess from amazon now. the base and motor last forever, but the plastic bowls deteriorate with use and DW time, but they are too hard to hand wash. finally the small one was discontinued and about a year or two ago I bought a new larger one. think 7 cup. I love the product! I use them so much I dont complain about replacing occasionally.
I use the instapot for soups and beans. i never tried cheesecake. I didnt like rice cooked in one though I've tried a few times. stovetop works better.

Cathy I dont like to buy "combo" appliances. too many things to go wrong. I will settle for it doing its main function and lasting more than a year. I have enough countertop space for the air fryer. it rep[laced a toaster oven and is so nice to use when I dont want to crank up the big oven. the instapot lives in the dining room during the winter when I use it most.

OMG the paint! what a mess that must have been. I always wonder if the lids ever fly off during the shaking process. I always see them pound them (lids) down but still....

Yesterday I did a 20 minute Peloton Full Body Strength workout and 30 minutes of light rowing. Today I did a 60 minute Peloton Power Zone Ride.

Carolyn-Great job with Start Here workout one. I’m glad you are feeling better.

Cathy-Great job with Live Quick Fix Cardio, STS Disk 8 and STS 2 Total Body Stretch. That’s crazy about your sister’s paint. It’s surprising that the employee that mixed the paint didn’t notice anything wrong.

Diane Sue-Great job with Raw Strength #1 cardio acceleration, Raw Timesaver Intervals, and Raw Stretch Flow.

Valerie-I'm sorry about your appliances. I haven't had a lid fly off during mixing but it does happen occasionally.

Late start this morning and DH has a meeting at 10:30, so I will be on Tux duty. Yesterday he jumped on our computer keyboard and was generally wreaking havoc while he was on a call with his supervisor. He just went outside when he saw that the red squirrel was by the tree, so maybe he'll stay out making my job much easier. The red squirrel rarely even goes a foot from the tree, just gobbles up sunflower seeds and from that tree, he can go tree to tree to the tree line.

I have a JetBlend and got a recall notice, apparently mine was part of a group that catches fire. I've had it for at least 3 years, and generally only use it when I travel. I had to remove the base from the top part, because they are only replacing the bottom with the battery, then you have to cut up the seal in the base into 3 pieces and take a picture of all of it showing the number of the blender. Now I have to figure out if the recycling center we take things to takes that kind of battery. Hopefully it arrives before Derek and I head for Fort Worth in March.

Valerie I use my instant pot a lot. It's the only way I make soup now. The other day I made what I called Various ben soup, because I had a bunch of beans and lentils with a quarter cup or so left in jars, and just tossed them all in. Now I can buy more. What was bizarre about the paint was that it wasn't the lid. It was the bottom! She said the guy who was near by getting carts took one look at her face and came right over. She's pretty sure she turned very pale. I now do rice in the IP because doing it on the stove top pretty much never has worked for me. No idea why, there's just always an issue.

Diane Sue great job with Raw Strength #1 cardio acceleration, intervals and stretch. Glad you had a good time with your grandkids.

Judy nice job with the Peloton workouts. I'd never heard of the bottom a can giving out. So weird.

Hi Carolyn.

got our tires changed to snow tires yesterday and a wheel stud broke so had to take to the dealer to get it fixed this morning. dealer was cheaper than anywhere else. total PITA. DH wont sit and wait so we both have to drive there 2x with both cars. I would just take it and sit there while they fixed it. this wasnt a big procedure.

cathy I do soup like that too. so easy to saute whatever vegies, then dump the other things in, put on the lid, pressure up and its done in 20 minutes. I especially like lentil soup. I do rice that way if its in the soup. I use Lundberg brown rice. never gets done right for me in the IP. inside is still a little crunchy. or its too mushy. can't ever get it right so I do it stovetop where it always works for me.
I checked with Best buy thinking maybe they recycle small appliances but they don't. I got my replacement oven already, checked the temps and stuck it in its corner. this one is nicer than the one that stopped working. I should have gotten it at costco though. last time I looked costco didnt have anything and yesterday, after I'd ordered a new one, they had this exact oven for $10 less. oh well.

our local Waste management location does battery recycle. all kinds dumped in a big barrel. it takes a special trip to go there but there is no fee so once a year we take in all the spent batteries plus light bulbs etc.

only did weights yesterday along with a lot of walking i while shopping. today I will walk our yard and or maybe spin if the rain continues.

This morning I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix workout one which was 26 minutes and 180 calories burned. My average heart rate was 133 and maximum heart rate was 165. I still have some coughing and runny nose, but I think that Covid is behind me now. I actually think that it started with my oldest daughter, rather than the grandkids. She was really tired and slept a lot when she first arrived. I didn’t think to take a test when I got sick, but youngest took one when she got home. My husband has mild symptoms now, but nothing serious.

Valerie, I don’t have an air fryer or instant pot, but I do have a Cuisinart food processor which I rely on quite heavily. I had similar problems with my old one that lasted 25 years. The motor was still going strong but I had trouble getting the work bowl. I bought my new one in 2019, but I kept using the old one for a while.

Cathy, nice job with Live Quick Fix Cardio, STS disc 8, and STS 2 Total Body Stretch.

Diane Sue, great job with Raw Strength Cardio, Timesaver Intervals, and Stretching. I’m glad that you had a nice time with your grandchildren.

Judy, great job with 20 minutes of Peloton Full Body Strength, and 30 minutes of light rowing.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

Today I did Raw Kickboxing #1 34 minutes, 202 calories, heartrate 140/166 followed by Lite Cardio Party Timesaver #3 hi/lo, 23 minutes, 102 calories, heartrate 121/149,102 calories. Total time was 57 minutes, 304 calories, 4,401 steps. Busy morning Whole Foods delivery, Chewy delivery, Walmart delivery, and still waiting on TruGreen to show up. I managed to get the workout all in at once in between. No time for some yoga or extra stretching though. I plan on doing the other two Cardio Acceleration workouts this week. Hopefully the rest of the week is not busy. I want to get some cooking in.

Valerie, I always handwash my food processor bowl. My daughter had two that she put in the dishwasher and they did not work well, I guess from the heat. I had the last one for 6 years. I tried to find a bowl for it on Amazon, but they did not have one for that model. Otherwise I would have been fine with just a new bowl. The new one has an extra cover for just mixing when I do not need to grate things which I like. My fear is the plastic pieces on the back that have to have pressure on them to lock in the part you put stuff in to grate or slice. I have to take it off every time I put another piece of cheese or potato or whatever I am pushing through. It is kind of an odd design. It took me watching youtube to figure it out. It has three different blades and my old one had two. I think this one might be a bit bigger than the 9 cup I had. I did not want too big because I am running out of space for something else after adding the Breville machine. My KitchenAid mixer takes up space as well. I like fluffy rice and Instapot makes it sticky from my experience. My air fryer is a small one and I store it in the pantry since it is easy to pull out for use. Since my husband has been doing low carb I have not used it as much. It does not have all of the features of the bigger ones and I think if I ever replace, I will go for a ceramic interior or something safer.

Judy, nice work today on the 20 minute Peloton Full Body Strength workout and 30 minutes of light rowing and today's 60 minute Peloton Power Zone Ride.

Cathy, that sounds like a lot of work tearing the Jet Blend apart like that to get the number. I hope Tux behaves for you. He sounds like quite the character.

Carolyn, good job on KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix workout one. I am glad you are feeling better. My husband said he has had a cold for a couple of days now. I kind of had the sniffles today. I told him that I guess him being around a few people at work and family here and there we are still bound to pick up something. Hopefully no covid since we had it in August. It sure makes a person tired. I think the main reason we were so sick was the strep throat with covid. Once the antibiotic had been taken a couple of days we were both feeling much better.

I didn’t try to work out today. I felt tired this morning and decided not to push it.

Diane Sue, nice job with Raw Kickboxing and Cardio Party timesaver.
