? low platelet count?

Hello all mom's and mom's2B,

I'm posting this question here in hopes of anyone with any knowledge on this can give me some info on pregnancy/birth and mom having low platelet count?
My daughter is expecting (due Nov.) and she's been told several times that her platelet count is low but recently the numbers have gone so low that her doc is putting her on meds for it next week. Just wondering if any of you have experienced this and could give me some insight on this and maybe what to expect when my daughter has to deliver.
They make it seem as though the only concern could be her (my daughter) bleeding too much at the time of delivery, but is that the only concern?

Thanks for any input,

Donna

My platelets tend to run low. They were low prior to my pregnancy. They haven't gotten below 50,000--so my ob doesn't plan to treat (unless they drop below 50). I was a little concerned about this too. Currently my platelets are about 85, 150-300 is considered normal.

Platelets (or thrombocytes) are little 'plugs' that form before a blood clot can form. They coagulate so a clot can be formed. If you do not have enough of them, you run a risk of bleeding longer. In severe cases, it can cause hemorrhaging.

Your daughter's dr seems to be on top of things, that he/she is treating the cond'n. I'd feel good about this. Just out of curiousity, what drugs are they giving her? Are they steroids?

Thank you Melanie for explaining that so clearly for me. :) Her platelets have dropped below 50 so this specialist is going to put her on meds next week, they've mentioned steroids before but I don't know what she'll be on until her appointment next week?
He told her whatever it is he's planning to put her on doesn't pass the placenta so it wouldn't have an effect on the baby so we'll know more next week. I was just hoping to get a clearer understanding of what it all meant.
Thanks again so much,

Donna (a grandma 2B!)

Donna!
Hey there Granny!!! Congratulations!! You will be one good lookin' grandma. I hear it's much more fun to be grandma than Mom!!! I
hope she's doing well!

Dawn:)

Hi Donna,

I don't know the answer to your question but just wanted to say congratulations to the soon to be grandma!! Wow, a grandma. And you are going to be a fit, hot grandma at that.

I have not seen you around the boards as much since I have been haning out over here (I'm gonna have my baby on 12/1) and when I saw your post I thought your were going to post that YOU were pregnant!!

I hope all goes well with your daugher and that she has an easy and speedy delivery. It sounds like her Dr. is taking good care of the situation and is on top of it. If you are still worried just ask your daughter to ask her Dr. at her next visit.

Marci

PS, Have you gotten to your goal weight?? I know this is off topic but I have to say your weight loss story still amazes me when I think of it. You will DEFINATELY be my ispiration after I have this baby to continue on my weight loss journey to GOAL.

Thanks Marci & Dawn :) I am REALLY looking forward to being a grandmother!
And Marci~NO! No I have not gone through all the days of puffing like a steam engine to Cathe to end up pregnant at almost 40! NOPE! No way! No how! God and I discuss this often! :)

And congratulations Marci! :)
