anyone have advice about doing leg work or healing with this in mind?

Cinza,
If you have access to a quad extention machine and either a prone or sitting hamstring curl machine, those would work your thighs without involving the psoas major because there is no movement at the hip joint. And I wouldn't even do those if there is a hint of pain. Pain is body's only way of saying "Enough Already!"

RE: Psoas, or iliopsoas

Hi, Cinza! Above is the correct spelling for the psoas, also referred to (perhaps incorrectly) as the iliopsoas.

I'm a little suprised that your doctor would tell you to cut out squats and plies because of the iliopsoas, which largely act as hip flexors; perhaps the stabilizing work they are doing in a constantly loaded, contracted position is what's causing the strain.

Whatever the situation, you're probably better off asking your doctor for recommended exercises, and if she says to lay off them completely for awhile, you may just have to grit your teeth and gut your way through some non-squat-plie days. The pelvic girdle is nothing to joke around with!

Good luck!

RE: Psoas, or iliopsoas

thanks ladies for the spelling and exercise suggestions !!

I will get x rays to make sure nothing degerative is in the works.
its hard to take a break.
but
i have to agree, the hip girdle is nothing to mess with....my mobility has been shrinking and shrinking for a few months..
kind of scary.

Well, I know the psoas muscles wrap around the back, then the side of the leg, and that straight leg sit-ups strain it. As for leg exercises that can be done without stressing that muscle---that's a hard one. YOu might want to beef up your upper body workout for a while while recovering. Warm baths (with epsom salts) can help sooth muscles. Maybe massage could help, but I'd check with the doc first. Another alternative is to consult a physical therapist who can give you a wide variety of exercises for rehab (they also can use different therapeutic treatments to help you heal faster).

RE: Psoaz problems..any advise?

Thanks!
So far I am consulting with :
a physical therapist
a personal trainer
an accupuncturist
a chiropractor

and an x ray machine

i have gotten different advice from all of the above characters!
but none of them can be really sure of anything.

i hate regular doctors... but if the x ray shows anything i will go to one ... maybe.

So sorry!

Wow, Cinza! I am so sorry to hear you are really having some problems still! :-( Could it possibly have been too much at one time when we started the step-ups, walking lunges and all our other workouts? Maybe, you just inflamed it doing too much too soon?? Of course, I am not a Dr. (as you know!;-)) Keep us posted on what you decide after seeing your LIST of possibilities.
