HELP! Question for Treadmill Users

Cathlete
Sorry for the long post but I'm having a dilemma...

I have been using the treadmill at my gym approximately 4 times per week usually doing an interval program of 2-4 minutes jogging/running alternating with 2 minutes walking on an incline. I have been on this program for several months and have steadily been able to increase my speed on the running intervals to 7-7.5 mph. I felt very strong and fit.....

That is until recently....all of a sudden I can almost no longer even jog (at 5.5-6 mph) on the treadmill without feeling like I am going to literally fall off the treadmill. It almost feels like the treadmill is tilting laterally (even though it obviously isn't). It's kind of a feeling of vertigo.

The only thing I can possible attribute this to is that about two weeks ago I had an inner ear disturbance (commonly known as airplane ear---kind of like nasal congestion but instead it is ear congestion or fullness that doesn't "pop" or go way---in my case it stayed for about two weeks). Anyway, this has since cleared up and the funny thing is when my ear was actively "congested" I was running just fine on the treadmill...but not anymore...

Anyway, I am very upset because my running/jogging on the treadmill gave me a great sense of accomplishment and was a great complement to my Cathe fitness program and now I can no longer safely do it;(

Please...any suggestions, ideas, comments would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Lisa

What you are experiencing isn't normal. It seems a shame to forgo on all the success you have achieved with the treadmill workouts so far. But you are not imagining your feelings either. I think you should consult your doctor. Your recent illness may have left you with some disturbance of balance which I am sure the doctor can help clear up quickly.

Have you tried doing the intervals without any incline at all, just so you can keep on making progress? If you keep the walking rest periods to a fast clip, between 4.8 and 5mph, on the flat, then you are still doing great things for your body and health, whilst giving your inner ea a chance to sort itself out.

Go see a doctor ASAP.

Let us know how it went, please.

It is normal and it may take a while to completely go away. I had this a couple of times, caused by a sinus infection which effected the inner ear. Even though the sinus infection and clogged up ear had cleared the episodes of vertigo, dizziness, nausea, etc. went on for a few more weeks.

My doctor explained to me that sometimes when people have a cold/sinus infection it can effect the inner ear and crystals will build up which effect the balancing organ in our inner ear - now this is sort of laymen's term.

There really is nothing anyone can do, the drug that is commonly prescribed for it "Antivert" is only masking the symptoms, however, for me even that didn't work, it made me drowsy and caused slurred speech for me (everyone that I talked to thought I was drunk or had become an alcoholic), not quite what I was looking for.

I couldn't run on the treadmill anymore either, it's kind of an unstable environment, it aggrevates your condition and I would avoid it until you get better. However, mine was so bad that I started having anxiety attacks as well.

I had good results with a homeopathic remedy called Vertigoheel

Did you go to a doctor and he/she diagnosed the "airplane ear"? You can look up a lot of info on the internet, just google vertigo or better Meniere's Disease.

Good luck to you, it will get better but it may take a while. I am back to be able to run on the treadmill again.

Take care,

Carola
