Good morning!

Busy day yesterday, had to spend the Kohl's cash and then some. Of course that's exactly what they want you to do.

No workout today, my leg/knee is killing me from agility. I know I need to see a DR about it, but just keep putting it off. It will be one of those visits where they refer you to someone else. I know it's my hamstring, or the tendon that runs behind the knee. It's either stretched, or hopefully not torn.

Valerie, wow 6 hours on snow shoes is quite a workout. John has them and I was toying around with getting them, but I am so not an outside person in the cold. Hate it. As for the car, this is a Saab convertible, 1994 that I have had since 1996. I only drive it in the summer. I have a Subaru for all year, especially good in winter.

Lots of stuff to still do around here, then going to my niece's for her birthday later.

What is everyone up to? Christmas shopping?

Hi Deb and any later posters--

This morning I did Turbo Barre (74 min.).

We'll do the Sunday comfort meal again: Steamed dumplings filled with rich pork stock and Shanghai dipping sauce; Pork and Tofu bowl: sweet and spicy ground pork, organic tofu, steamed rice and scallions; lemongrass tapioca with preserved strawberries. I will have the first two courses and skip the tapioca or take a few spoonfuls of DH's.

Deb, I don't know about your weather, but this is pure heaven for December--bright and sunny and in the 50s. Hope your knee feels better soon. I always knew my knees were a joint problem, and just asked for a referral and didn't go in to see my pcp. I like snowshoeing, and I can assure you I'm not a cold weather lover, but within a few minutes, I always feel overdressed because you warm up like crazy from the exertion.

Valerie, don't read my first paragraph unless you want to feel mighty sorry for yourself and begin weeping in your jello. 6 hours on snowshoes, I'd be dead. I usually only go for 2 hours, 3 max. I agree it's tiring but it's so beautiful and quiet in the forest where we go. Lots of animal tracks, too.

Josie, how are those Santa Anna winds treating you??

Hi to Joan and Cathy!

We have a Subaru too!. Love that car. goes anywhere and everywhere. best snow car ever. Yeah, no need for a convertible in December.

I'm not reading the food paragraph. eating jello and chick broth. yummy. so tasty.

we went up for close to 3 hours. had lunch for half hour and then back down. snowshoes, for me, no faster down than up. I have some MSR Lightning ascents. they are narrower than some but are long. I'm not crazy about the binding and how they attach. Ok, but hard to do on the left side and come undone easily. snowshoeing is like xc skiing, you generate a lot of heat. sitting down for lunch in the snow brings you back to temp reality quickly. I like it... fun to look at animal tracks birds etc. good for when the snow isn't great. skiing is faster especially on the return trip. hard to get hurt snowshoeing!

Deb, orthopedic person. our insurance lets us see specialists directly. lots of things are treated with physical therapy so go get it looked at. I am so glad I had my knee problem looked at and fixed. struggled for years with it and it would not have gotten better by itself.

VALERIE DON'T READ THIS PARAGRAPH
We went to the Blue Owl in Kimmswick today. We've been there before but not lately. They have a dozen different pies, some cheesecakes, cookies and 4 or 5 cakes. Oh yes they do have food too.:p The wait was too long so I just got 2 pieces of different pies and a piece of cake. I may even share some of it but not likely. So all we did was drive an hour get the pie and drive back. But it was worth it. One of the pies was featured on Oprah.

Back on diet Monday.

Joan

Good morning,

The visit to my niece's was nice. She just moved back into her house after having it basically gutted, and an addition put on. It is beautiful.

Nothing new here, didn't get a workout in yesterday or today. The back of my knee was really hurting yesterday, so I skipped. I guess I could have done an upper body workout, but I was not in the mood at all. Not today either. I don't know what is happening with me regarding workouts. I get a big energy surge, do 4 days in a row, then crash and don't feel like doing anything.

Garance, the weather here is the same as yours. Very warm for December, and not a flake in sight! I'm afraid to think about what this could mean for the rest of the winter. How was the dinner?

Valerie, just think, it will be over later and you can eat again. I usually get a physical in January, so maybe will bring it up then.

Joan, is that place a regular restaurant or a bakery? Not very nice of you to list all that stuff with poor Valerie on a liquid/jello day!

Josie, did you get any damage from the winds?

Off for more coffee and to try to get moving. Take care,

Hi Ladies,

My peanut # 3 was born on Friday December 2nd; he weighed 8lbs and is 22 inches long.
Looks exactly like his dad ;) I left early on Friday and drove to Chula Vista and missed his birth by 30 minutes. It was a C-section due to the cord being around his neck.

I drove back on Friday and got up and did the World Aids ride with my ALC group.
We were all wearing red and rode for 30 miles. It was a bit cold, but clear and sunny.
I went spinning on Sunday.

The winds did cause a great deal of damage, my aunt still does not have any power and there was a lot of debris on the streets and a great deal of old trees down.

Deb, just ask you Dr. for a referral. That is what I do when I have a problem.

Valerie, your workout sounds amazing!

Joan, those pies sound delicious!

Hi to Cathy and Garance!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Slide and Glide (52 min.). I am improving on the burpees, but still cannot do all of them. Too many. The walking planks are also not completed by me.

The comfort meal was really yummy. I wish I had gotten the dessert, it was so refreshing. What's really a tour de force, though, are those dumplings. Somehow the chef manages to seal a highly seasoned stock inside, and when you bite down, it's like a burst of exquisite flavor spurting out. Soooo good. I ate all of those and brought a third of my pork and tofu bowl home. Wonder what the chef has planned for next Sunday!!

Okay, Joan, divulge the kind of pies you ate. DH loves pies, and when I make them for Thanksgiving and Easter, he likes to warm up a slice to have with his bacon and peanut butter on toast breakfasts.

Deb, it's again in the high 50s today. Really strange, but I'll take it. I think it's getting colder later this week.

Congrats on your new grandchild, Josie!

Hope you are all done, now, with your colonoscopy, Valerie. Solid food--yes!

I'm back and I'm done!! it was pretty rough. Golytely is a pretty rugged preparation. a lot of unpleasant liquid to get down in short order on an empty stomach. but I'm clear and done for 10, yes, TEN years.

I'm at the level of water, toast, peanut butter. How come this whole thread was about FOOD! I skimmed over since I was so hungry so will try to comment more tomorrow on pies , dumplings and new peanut grandbabies..

Hey I deliberately waited until Valerie had posted before I posted about pies.:D I had coconut cream and lemon meringue pie and Bailey's Irish cream cake. Mother had strawberry rhubarb pie and dh had pecan pie.
They also have the following pies:
blackberry, peach, cherry, levee high apple pie (about 8 inches high), caramel apple pecan, banana split pie, snicker bar, Texas traildust, choc. chip pecan, butterscotch pecan, red raspberry cream cheese, lemon truffle, german choc. pie, french silk, choc. cream, Hawaiian coconut cream, banana cream, white choc. banana cream. And the following seasonal pies-very berry, pumpkin walnut, strawberry, apple strudel cheese, pumpkin, peach crumb, lemon raspberry ribbon pie, strawberry & cream, key lime, eggnog, harvest, red, white and blueberry, chocolate raspberry mouse, strawberry shortcake pie, boston cream pie chocolate peanut butter pie and Bailey's Irish cream pie.

And now the cakes- red velvet, carrot, German Choc., Irish Apple, Italian Cream, yellow, chocolate, strawberry, white, death by chocolate, Mississippi mudd cake, dirt cake, and then the specialty cakes-
caramel apple pecan cake, eggnog, Rhett Butler?, lemon dobash, strawberry, dobash, choc. amaretto daobash, choc. praline fantasy, choc. tiramisu, strawberry creamsicle, pumpkin praline, choc. Kahlua cake, strawberry sensation, pumpkin spice cheesecake cake, gooey chewy browney cake, cocnut cream cheese cakie, carrot cheesecake cake, choc. caramel pecan , chocolate almond mousse, orange dreamsicle, choc. passion, coconut cream dream.

I won't list the 32 kinds of cheesecakes.

It is also a restaurant. There are 7 salads, 5 homemade soups, lots of sandwiches and a special of the day. Tues-meatloaf, Wed. southern fried chicken, Thur Chef's special, Fri. Seafood of the day. Sat. chicken fried steak, Sunday- chicken and dumplings, fried chicken, roast beef and one other.

Joan

Good morning,

I am seriously thinking of drugging 2 dogs when I go to bed. Just kidding.

Josie, Congratulations on the new grandson! What is his name?

Garance, that meal sounds wonderful. All except the tofu.

Valerie, welcome back to the world of solid food. Good results, and great that you don't have to go back for 10 years! Hey, I saw your post on another thread about Total body Tri-sets regarding "Spam Reported"....what were you referring to?

Joan,:eek::eek::eek:....How do they make/keep all those desserts on the menu?? It must be a very busy place. I could feel myself gaining weight just reading them.

Off for more coffee and to get ready to leave,

take care,

Now I'm thinking clearly and can read the pie and cake list without getting in my car and heading east! wow. what choices. I'm so glad I don't know a place like that here. I can resist desserts (mostly) because most restaurants/ bakeries aren't good. look good, sound good, but one taste and the flavor isn't great. my family was always good at baking so my standards are high. gotta be excellent or I don't waste the calories. I'm assuming this place makes all their own stuff. how can they have so many choices?

I had to stay out of the kitchen for 2 days so spent time cruising online a lot. not much spam on this board but obvious one touting diets in barely english, a second post. I assume the board administrator deletes it but if you post "spam reported" it gets removed and a dozen more people don't have to read it and report it. anyone after can't see what's been deleted. this board has been mercifully free of spam but if it gets to sit there long it encourages more spammers IMO.

Deb, you don't like tofu? I love tofu in a flavorful dish. doesn't have much flavor on it's own. I use it regularly. but I find the texture/flavor of meat pretty horrendous and overwhelming so to each his own. Love tofu though.

made some baked fish, huge salad, roasted butternut squash last night. tasted so good. wanted some pasta but cupboard was bare, need to shop today.

whoops clicked the wrong button before I was done. Deb, drugging the dogs sounds a bit extreme but understandable... do they wake each other up? I keep my cat up during the day so he is tired and sleeps all night. You need some "doggie downers"....

Joan thanks for holding off on the list..... wow.
Irish cream pie sounds wonderful. so do the others but that would have been my first choice too although anything chocolate would be up in the top few. never heard of texas traildust, harvest, or dirt cake. dobash is vaguely familiar but don't remember what it was. I don't like pecans much but that's the only choice limiting factor I can think of. my family was very much into baking homemade desserts. I grew up with lots of rich goodies around all the time. they were good bakers too, no boxed shortcuts. Now I don't make any except for special occasions.

Josie, congrats on peanut #3. that's a big baby, bet she was glad to be over the process.
inconvenient, but it's good to have occasional short power outs. most people don't appreciate power and it's a wake up call to be more prepared and appreciate it. Still after a day it gets old. Hope everyone is back up by now. strong work on the ride. it's too cold here now to think about riding and I miss it. we are working on getting a spin bike for xmas.
Lynda, I can't do the walking planks either. can't lock my toes/feet. can't do pushups and slide my feet simultaneously. I do all the burpees, pause, and do a set of pushups. when I slide my feet backwards the glide disks sometimes fly away behind me, stopping everything. probably the toe issue.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Low Impact Challenge (50 min.). Have all the choreo nailed on this and I love the way the final choreo section before the blast flows.

Joan, that place sounds absolutely sinful. So many choices. I always get in a dither when there are too many options, and I can absolutely understand why you chose three items. Too bad they don't have a sampling menu, say, with twelve different tiny bites in miniature tart pans.

Deb, I just don't think I could handle it if Max didn't sleep through the night and woke me in the middle of heavy sleep. Is it because little dogs have such tiny bladders? I like good tofu--creamy and really good in hot and sour soup and Szechuan spicy stir fries. Some of the tofu they sell in the supermarkets is kind of leathery, but this was really good stuff.

Valerie, happy everything went well yesterday and you are back to discuss FOOD. Do you have any Christmas recipes to share? I'm going to make a couple types of bars and a couple types of cookies, but that's it. No kids around to raid the cookie jar, so DH ends up eating most of what I bake.

Hi to Cathy and Josie!

Hi Ladies,

I will be doing some type of work out tonight. I have not decided what to do yet.

Joan, I did not see anything with pineapple. My favorite pie is pineapple, but I can never find it. It is very popular in Texas and you can find it at all the little greasy spoon dinners. My DD introduced me to this pie when he used to take my brothers and me on the road. He was a truck driver.

Valerie, I’m glad that everything went well with your colonoscopy.

Deb, don’t beat yourself up about your workouts. Sometimes we just get in a slump.

Garance, I like tofu when it is well prepared. I do not use it at home, but do enjoy it in a spicy dish. I’m enjoying tamales right now; my aunt makes them and sells them for Christmas. She made green chile with cheese, chicken and green chile and red chili with beef and red chili with beef. They are so yummy!

Hi to Cathy!

Josie

My mother and my sister used to make several dozen different cookies for xmas. My sister might still do it. We'd store each kind in separate tins in the unheated attic. they stayed so fresh and delicious. I never made many cookies though I loved them. just could not deal with the calories. We'd put out an assortment of cookies when anyone came to visit to have along with a cocktail.

I don't have many of the recipes. Just doesn't fit in with the way we live and eat. I used to love vanilla bean cookies. My mother always always baked with butter and made tiny cookies and lots of kinds so you could try several without blowing the bank.

I think we'll be in the same situation for xmas as thanksgiving. will likely go out to dinner with the family who live near the aunt in assisted living. MIL in california may be having surgery between now and then for her colon cancer and that will also determine if we are home or heading there. that could be unpleasant but not until we know for sure.

Deb, you should bring it up with your primary care person. So many times it's not what you suspect. in my experience, primary care quickly will send you to orthopedics. so many things are simple fixes but orthopedics is really its own area. PT can fix a lot of evils.

I make the following cookies:

Gingerbreadmen
Lemon sugar cookies with lemon frosting
Pepper and ginger snaps
Polvorones de canela (cinnamon wedding cakes) I have been making these since I was 5
Polvorones blancos (powdered wedding cakes)
Pecan moon crescent cookies dipped in powdered sugar
Double chocolate crescent cookies dipped in powder sugar
Shortbread with different kind of preserves in the middle
Carrot cake loafs

So by the end of the baking week, I do not want to see another cookie until next year.

Josie

Good morning,

Cold and rainy here, but thankfully no snow yet. No baking for me. I am just not into it at all. I love to eat the stuff though. Lots of John's patients bring him cookies etc during the holidays and he brings most home so we have stuff here.

Valerie, I guess I don't understand why you thought that thread was spam. It seemed like a simple question regarding the tri-set workout, and SNM answered it. Te person seemed to select the wrong pre-mix at 4:00 am, and believe me, I can understand how that can happen! Really don't like tofu because of the consistency, and no flavor at all. I do love butternut squash though, yum. Yes the dogs do wake each other up, or more, if Keegan is up, Kylee will want to get up. Keegan can sleep like a rock when he is sleeping.

Garance, I'm not sure why Kylee gets up so much, she can go around 7 hours now, but we go to bed so early, so she needs to get up early to go. If we went to bed at 10 or 11 she would go to 6 probably.

Josie, send some of those tamales east ok? They sound wonderful and a couplel dozen cookies too! LOL.

Hi to Joan & Cathy,

Take care,

Deb, the post that was "spam" was deleted ... so isn't there anymore. on the other boards where I post, the first person to report spam replies 'reported" after the spam post so that the next two dozen people don't report the same thing before the administrator gets a chance to act. I haven't seen much spam on this board but some others boards aren't so lucky. the faster it gets reported (and deleted) the less likely the spammers will come back. the spam post was some illegible nonsense with a link to a diet scam. you gotta wonder why.

I love cookies and am a good baker but we don't have enough people to share them with so DH and I would be tempted to eat them all! the last couple years we've had to go somewhere else for the holidays so don't have many guests. we had pie for thanksgiving and a chink of the pumpkin is still left. both of us are watching our calories especially now that the weather is crummy and we aren't outside as much. so while I'd love cookies, I would eat them if they were under my nose all the time.

I'll bet as kylee matures she'll sleep longer but of course that doesn't help the immediate sleep problem. It's too bad dogs can't use litter boxes! Could you withhold water after a certain hour?

Did a short workout yesterday 20 bike, 20 treadmill and pushups in addition to yoga in the morning. I needed to get back to solid food, a decent nights sleep, so today will be a regular workout. after shopping. we are going shopping today.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did After Burn (54 min.).

Josie, lemon sugar cookies with lemon frosting. MMMM! Send the recipe to me, pretty please! When the boys were around, I always made cutout cookies and spritz for them to decorate (and eat). DH loves Russian tea cakes (like Mexican wedding cakes) but I don't make them any more. Tamales--I don't think I have ever had an authentic tamale, but I would love to. Never heard of pineapple pie. I will see if they have a recipe at epicurious.com.

Deb, it looks like the snow and cold are headed our way--but not too bad. Maybe that's why we don't have any trouble with Max. DH goes to bed at 10, and I don't go to bed until 11. Max's last pit stop is at 9:30, and he gets up with DH at 5:30.

Valerie, vanilla bean cookies sound fabulous. If you have the recipe, send it on.

Hi to Joan and Cathy!

Just a quick fly-by...here for lunch...

Valerie, this is the thread I was referring to....I didn't see the other one you mentioned, but I could see why that would be considered Spam:

http://cathe.com/forum/f115/total-body-trisets-question-286699/#post2120112

Garance, if we did the pit stops at those times, we would be ok too. Plus, she sleeps a bit in her crate from about 8:00 pm until we go to bed, so she really can't sleep much more..

OK all of you stop with the cookies etc. I am so hungary when I read these posts!! :)

Ta for now...
