Good morning all,

Nothing new here, just getting organized to pack for my trip. I will be gone until Wednesday evening, no access to the internet.

Valerie, I see on another thread you may have found a place that actually has spin bikes? I hope it works out and you can get one for you and DH. I agree with what you said about using your road bikes..it would be too much of a pain.

I hope everyone is having a great weeken, "see" you all next week!

for some reason my browser did not bring up the right links. we found 2 places right away on DH's computer... carry bikes and will look tomorrow. the more I thought about it, the less a trainer set up would work for us. no way would we fit on each others bikes! so we'd be hauling 2 bikes regularly up and down 2 flights of stairs, garage to basement and back. seriously inconvenient. I like the idea of a trainer and the cost is less, but about the 10th time I'm hauling up/down and scratching walls it may not seem too great.
it sounds like spin bikes are easily adjustable which must be the case if all kinds of different size people use the same ones in a gym all day. if this works, I have a very old stationary bike I can give away and free up space.

Have a good trip Deb. Did Keegan do OK at the agility class?

Have Joan and Cathy both stopped posting here ? haven't seen anything in ages, tho I was gone for a while.

Also, the new series is due 10/21!! plus or minus a day or two. Yay!

Hi,

Yes, Keegan did well in agility. He did 3 runs with no effort at all. I think he had DOMS this morning though...he didn't want to get out of his crate. :D. Once he started moving around he was ok.

Glad you found a place to look at and try out the bikes...yep, new series should be delivered hopefully by the end of the month at the latest. Maybe I will get the urge to work out again.

Deb

Good evening,

I've been having problems with my eyes. They have hurt for quite a while. I first thought pain/pressure was sinus although nose was clear. Allergy medicine didn't help but tried it for a couple of weeks. Saturday night I had a sharp pain in my right eye. That was scary but other than being a little tired my eyes seem back to normal. I guess I still need to go to doctor but I am so tired of them. I stopped getting on computer because that made them hurt more.

I promise I will tell you if I ever quit posting.

I have gotten in 2-3 miles every day but no lifting.

I hope new series will get me started.

Joan

Hi Deb, Valerie, Joan, and Josie--

Yesterday I did Rockin' Models (70 min.) and today I did Sweat Express II (57 min.).

Today is our 32nd wedding anniversary, so we will be going out tonight. It has been so beautiful here the last few days--sunny and in the low 80s. I've been using some of this sunshine for garden cleanup, but I have this new policy of letting my gardens die back and then postpone cleanup until the spring. Besides, my nasturtiums, zinnias, and hanging plants are still going gangbusters.

Valerie, do you read Maureen Dowd's columns? She was reporting on this book she read about yoga and its various effects. One of the more disheartening side effects is that it lowers your metabolism. Hmmm! Makes me wonder if I want to do a lot of yoga if it prevents me from burning calories. Anyway, I thought about you and your persistent efforts to lose weight.

Saw Moneyball on Saturday. I really liked it a lot, but it's a baseball story, so don't know how appealing it would be to anyone who does not follow baseball. I am, of course, a Red Sox fan and was really disappointed with the way they blew it this year. Brad Pitt is really in over 90% of the film, playing Billy Bean, general manager of the Oakland A's. He's really wonderful in this film.

That's great news about Keegan, Deb. I'm sure you cannot read this for awhile, but hope your trip goes well.

Take care of your eyes, Joan! Are you a Cardinals fan? They really fooled the Phillies!

Lynda there are a million styles of yoga. the one I take is pretty energetic and "muscle" involving. definitely not a metabolism killer. some kinds are quiet and more contemplative, I don't care for that. I would not like "hot" yoga either, the one done in a 100 degree room. the class I go to is quite physical. depends on the type of yoga and the instructor. I am in pretty good shape so it doesn't wear me out, but it's challenging to do things correctly and involves a lot of muscle strength. I am surprised at how much sometimes. haven't read maureen dowd in years. with journalism cutbacks she's not in our papers anymore. I used to like her.

Went and looked at spin bikes today but didn't buy anything. exercise stores only had a couple to look at. I see why a lot of this gets done mail order. hard top compare when all you can find are pictures online. bike stores don't seem to carry them, just exercise/fitness stores and there seem to be fewer around than just a few yrs ago. we found 3 bikes total to look at in 2 stores.

Joan, hope you are feeling Ok. walking 2-3 miles is WAY better than nothing. the new series is coming, new workouts are big motivators. I would not waste time with eyes.... get it checked out since you have no idea what's going on. do you wear corrective lenses? contacts or glasses? regardless, I'd ask my medical doctor, or even optometrist for their thoughts. who knows? migraines? eye strain?
I have Moneyball on my queue cause I love brad Pitt. Hate baseball, though. boring. worse than watching golf or bowling. or just as bad.

Hi Ladies,

I had a great weekend visiting my DB#4 in Palm Springs. It was in the 90's with a breeze.
The mountains looked beautiful with a bit of green due to the rain that we had last Wednesday.

I only did the bar class on Saturday and nothing on Sunday. Today I will be going to the bar class and spinning tomorrow.

Joan, you need to take care of your eyes right away. My eye doctor always tells me not to wait if there is any strange thing going on with my eyes.

Deb, have a good trip and don't work too hard!

Valerie, I hope that you find a good spinning bike, they are not cheap.

Garance, congratulations on your anniversary! Have a great dinner.

Josie

Josie, DH and I have learned not to buy entry level exercise products. so many people buy equipment, use it once. there's always a market for cheap stuff that won't work long. we also don't want ultra fancy top-of-the-line stuff with all kinds of fancy electronics. disappointed ...little to look at. we called some stores and sometimes they have something not listed on their web sites, but not that much. lots of stationary bikes but not many spin bikes. so will call around and then go look more. thinking probably around $1200-1500.

when Dh and I were first married ( did justice of the peace) we invited both sets of parents out a few months after to meet each other. DH's parents were crazy sports fans and wanted to go to a baseball game. I could not imagine anything worse... I'd been to a few games when I was a kid... so my mother & I stayed home while they spent all day watching seattle team, whoever they were. DH barely survived but I flat refused. now if brad pitt were on the field, maybe...

Hi Valerie and Josie--

This morning I did disk 34 (68 min.). Boy, I will be glad to have STS over. Meso 3 is really repetitive and boring. Makes mesos 1 and 2 look like a thrill ride. It would be great if these new dvds would coincide with getting off STS.

Valerie, I read the NYTimes online, so I can always read Dowd, Krugman, and Collins, and occasionally Brooks. I also love reading the readers' comments. Collins is always good for several laughs. She inserts the bit about Mitt Romney driving to Canada with his dog strapped to the roof of the car as often as she can. The column about the yoga book was titled, "How Greta Garbo learned to stand on her head." Cannot imagine that would not raise my metabolism. If you love Brad Pitt, you will love Moneyball. Really compelling performance. I expect an Oscar nomination, and I hope for this one and not Terence Malick's weird film. I tend to get excited about baseball come the last few weeks of the season. I also loved watching my sons in Little League and Babe Ruth. One was a left-handed pitcher, the other a catcher. The game I like least is football--so many stop-starts, it drives me crazy.

Hi to Josie! What is Palm Springs like? I thought it was all rich folks.

Yummy dinner last night: spinach salad, hanger steak with garlic sauce, some kind of spicy potato mash and acorn squash. My usual Manhattan.

Hi Ladies,

I will not be doing the bar class until next week. I just got an e-mail from them offering a great price for October, but it starts on the 17th. I will probably go spinning tonight.

Garance, Palm Springs is not only for the rich. They have a large gay community and of course all the resorts where the rich frolic :) There are also several casinos around the area.
During the winter all the snowbirds come to stay for a period of 3-6 months because the weather is so beautiful.
Your dinner sounds delicious! On Sunday I had a hanger steak sandwich with roasted red bell peppers and onions on homemade bread and a side salad with a glass of chardonnay.

Valerie, you should check with the spinning studios about where you might get a used bike.
Some of my friends have bought them from the studio directly when the studio bought new ones.

Hi to Joan, Cathy and the traveling Deb.

Josie

Josie, I'll give a try & see if anyone sells used bikes. so far, the price and the quality don't seem to match up real well. we liked a Lemond Revmaster best but haven't seen most of the better known brands anywhere.

Lynda, I'll take a look at the NYT website. Brooks & Krugman & Friedman & Parker ( and Krauthammer) are regular here but I'm not sure who Collins is. I used to like Maureen Dowd but it's been years since I've seen it anywhere. I haven't heard the bit about Mitt romney and a dog. maybe I'll find it in the archives? I'm thinking it will most likely be Romney vs Obama though probably too soon to say.

I've never enjoyed pro team sports. I'd rather drink paint than watch a football, basketball, or baseball game. I enjoy the olympics but again not usually team events.

I've never been to Palm springs either. maybe when Dh retires and we are more free to travel. I like to hike, bike, mt bike, bird watch. no swim, no golf.... allergic to grass. don't do casinos. I'm not a very good "resort" person.

Hi Josie and Valerie--

This morning I did Zumba Cardio Party (46 min.).

Hmm--I think Indian Summer is over. It's getting cloudy and cooler, expecting rain.

Josie, I guess Palm Springs is like Florida for our snowbirds in the east. My in-laws head to Vero Beach the end of October and have a second home on a golf course. Have you ever been to Borrego Springs? DH and I went there with friends from San Diego several years ago now, and it was really beautiful.

Valerie, good luck on finding a bike!

Good morning!

Well I am back, and DC was good, interesting of course. Something is always happening there. There was an arrest after an investigation on a planned assination of an Saudi mbassador which had sirens, and police, with lots of men in black suits with ear plugs running around all over. Also, someone jumped on the tracks of the metro subway, killed themselves at rush hour, they had to stop the trains, and all the people had to leave the subway and take other means of transportation. there is a subway entrance right outside the hotel, people streaming out looking for cabs. It was right when we were standing outside the hotel trying to get a cab to the restaurant. No cabs available! The doormen at the Ritz must have had some "pull" because after about 15 minutes, they were able to get a couple of cabs to take us. Never a dull moment in DC.

Valerie, sending you "good hunting for spin bike" vibes. Who would know it would be so difficult to buy a piece of equipment?

Garance, raining and cold here today too.

Josie, our association meeting is scheduled to be in Palm Springs in Feb of 2013.

Joan, I agree with all....SEE A DR about your eyes!!

Have to run, time to let the vixen out and get to work...

Take care,

we are getting the bike for DH's B-day in mid Nov so not a rush. I'm getting the impression that these were a hot item a few yrs ago but not so much now. most people seem to opt for "trainers" cheaper & more flexible ... or they spin in a class somewhere. and stock is not deep, exercise stores have cut back.

I haven't been reporting my exercise. I've done a bike ride, treadmill time, stationary bike, GS back/ bicep, LBB, coremax #2 in the last few days. tried to hike yesterday but it was raining hard and windy when we got there. waited for a while, but didn't go. forecast was better than it was. so did LBB instead.

I think AZ is a bigger destination for snowbirds from around here. I could tolerate the desert SW for a few weeks, I think. my neighbors are going again this yr. one of them for 2 months, the wife for 1 month. she gets sick of it. nice but homesick! I like winter sports here too but the rain gets old.

wow Deb, sounds like a movie or a TV series. that would really screw up the commute.

going to maybe do a ride today after yoga. finally a dry sunny day but it will start out with fog most likely so we'll decide around 8;30 if it's worth it.

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did disk 36 for sh, bis, tris (67 min.). The end of meso 3 for me--yay! Put STS away for 6 mos.

Welcome back, Deb! Sounds like D.C. was a bit wilder than usual. Maybe our disks will start delivering by the end of next week or so. I am finding some of the clips a bit scary--they look difficult. I am also tentatively worried about those slide/glide disks and wonder if they might be even worse than impact on the stability of my knees. It rained last night, but now it seems like the sun has decided to give us one more day of Indian Summer.

Hi to Valerie and Josie!

did yoga this morning & then a 2+ hr bike ride. on top of LBB late yesterday, my legs are fried. kept the speed up too. I was planning on GS chest/triceps today too, but I'm tired so will save it for tomorrow. it was quite cold but not foggy where we were riding. I need two shirts with a windbreaker over, an windblock earband, helmet cover, gloves, capri length and was just barely warm enough. by the time we were finishing, it was warm enough to jettison the earband only. this afternoon will be pleasantly warm ( 60 or so) but we had to ride early or not at all.

Lynda, I think the workouts look tough too. I've been liking the paper plate moves so I'm hoping the glider disks make the motion smoother. sometimes I slide nicely and other times when the humidity is higher, I stick and jerk. quite a few slider moves in LBB. Cathe never ever does anything nice & easy, does she? Congrats on finishing STS. Does make you feel like you've climbed a mountain, doesn't it? I like it a lot but meso 3 the least. It's easy for me to slip away from doing 2 upper body workouts a week when I'm not doing it.

Deb, Palm Springs in Feb has a nice sound to it! DH and I look forward to having more time off and getting some warm sunshine in the winter, when we need it most. I want to do some desert hiking & biking when it's reasonable temperature wise in the winter.

Good morning all,

Very tired today, but what else is new? This week cannot end fast enough for me.

As for the new workouts, I am overwhelmed with the number of them, and cannot figure out how I would use them. STS was one thing, as there was an order to them, but these are all over the place. Anyone have any idea how you will be starting, any kind of rotation? I am also worried about the slide disks, if they will work on puzzle mats.

Nothing muc for me this weekend, Keegan class, and HouseMax. Maybe get some yard clean up done if it stops raining.

Anyone have any exciting plans for the weekend?

good morning Deb. since I didn't order the whole set, I plan to rotate them one at a time like I did with HR, LBB, and STS-TB. I think the slider moves will take a while to get down to being comfortable and efficient. many of the moves look hard, and at first might feel unstable. like on ice skates? it's going to vary since everyone works out on different floor surfaces. I have a lot of Cathe workouts to pick from and tend to use her more during the winter months when outdoor cardio gets more limited.

we have a nice weather weekend coming up but it's the first day of general deer so we need to stay clear of campgrounds and hike only in non hunting areas. usually the first weekend brings out every idiot with a rifle. we have some fresh snow up high.

Lynda, I looked at the NYT site and read a little. collins is funny although I'm still not sure about the romney/dog/car reference is. related to old "vacation" movies? I was just loading my netflix queue and put the tree of life on there . local reviewer liked it but was that the movie you referred to earlier this week? we sat thru 'as good as it gets' the other night and I remembered quickly that I didn't like it at all. I know the reviews were fabulous at the time but I really couldn't stand it.

Hi Deb and Valerie--

This morning I did Dancin' Abs (58 min.).

Valerie, Tree of Life is pretentious and too long for my taste (Yawn). But I have never liked Terence Malick's films (maybe with one exception: Sugarland Express was pretty good, but very dark). The bit about Mitt Romney tying his dog to the car roof is from his autobiography. If I were Romney, I would never have mentioned doing this.

I'm seeing the NYC Ballet tomorrow night. They visit the college annually. This year they are doing Liebeslieder Walzer (Balanchine choreography for the waltz). Should be beautiful.

I do my workouts on a big leftover piece of carpet that I had bound. I think I read somewhere that people with puzzle mats were buying carpet remnants for these disks. I guess I will also be buying dixie cups for a couple of these workouts.

Have a great weekend everyone!

I'm probably not going to read Romney's autobiography, so please tell me why... why would anyone tie their dog to the roof of a car? was the dog dead? It's bad enough people leaving dogs loose in the bag of pick-up trucks on the hwy.

Days of Heaven... was that malick ? one of those movies I felt like I was supposed to like but really didn't . I somehow am thinking Goldie Hawn but will need to look up sugarland express. name is familiar but don't remember.

Lynda, never mind. I should have realized I could google it and find millions of words have been written about the romney/dog incident...
