Wisdom Teeth

Just my luck; I might have to get a wisdom tooth pulled today...on Christmas Eve!!! I had a throbbing pain last night and it hasn't gone away so I have an appointment with the dentist in an hour. Of course this all happens the day after I get Shock Cardio so I can't even use it!! Grrrr...

Has anyone gotten their wisdoms pulled? Any tips? What did you eat and for how long, and of course the big question...when can I start workiing out again?!

I had all of mine pulled out in one shot. The dentist was great he gave me some gas knocked me right out. I didnt even feel a thing when I woke up they were all out and I had stitches in my mouth. That was the only thing that hurt a tiny bit was taking out the stitches. I had this done in my early 20's before I even heard of Cathe.

Dont worry hang in there you will be fine....

Merry Xmas

I had all 4 of mine taken out at the same time: one was infected, but the others needed to come out because I was getting braces.

I was just going to go with novacaine, but the dentist said that the shots to the upper palate are pretty painful (they are, and my current dentist doesn't seem to mind:confused:), so he offered my nitrous oxide (laughing gas) instead. What a hoot! I started gafawing like a total fool halfway through the ordeal, and the dental assistant had to leave the room because MY laughing made her laugh.

Strange thing is: I don't think it actually got rid of the pain, it just made me not care.

Afterwards, the dentist recommended going to solid food ASAP, but I decided to take that time to do a juice fast for three days, then do all raw foods for a week.

When I went back to the dentist for a follow-up, he was surprised at how fast I was healing.

As far as getting back to working out, I think part of that depends on what kind of anesthesia you have. If you get 'knocked out,' your may have longer lasting effects from it, like your balance may suffer for a while.

I'd say prepare to take 2-3 days off to relax and recover.

Melissa - like the PP, I had all four pulled at one time. If you need them (or even just the one) pulled be sure not to drink from a straw or suck at all. It can cause a "dry socket" which is really painful. I can't remember any restrictions on working out. I think you will have to listen to your body and take it slow if need be. I think I was unable to eat normal for just that day. Good luck to you!

Yep what Carrie said. Don't suck through a straw! On another note. That sucks! Hopefully it is an easy pull. It is the extractions that are impacted that are harder to recover from. Well at least you have a good excuse to just eat cake. Hang in there. Let us know how it goes.

Hahaha this is exactly what I said! Mom makes her famous cheesecake every Xmas Eve so I told myself it's soft, eat it!

LOL Kathryn, that is too funny about the laughing gas!

The dentist was actually off today but he came in just to take care of me since he is close w the family. They did pull it but I didn't even know it was out! The only painful part was the 1st needle (I had 4); I kept telling him "I don't want to hear the crack when you take it out!!!" so he let me watch TV (I chose King of Queens) and viola it was done. I have lots of codine and he told me to take it easy on the working out for today. Obviously if I'm not able to eat much then I should cut back on the workouts too so we'll play it by ear.

Next Sat when he's back in the office I'm going to get the rest of them evaluated and see if I should pull them all. I never ever want to feel pain like that again so if they have to be pulled then so be it!

Glad it seems to have went well. I had all 4 of mine cut out when I was 19, just after Christmas, on winter break from school. They told me it was going to be twilight anesthesia, but I was out like a light. I had to eat soft foods for a day or 2, then I could eat real food. I had a sore/stiff jaw for about a week, but nothing big. It didn't really hurt, just stiff/sore. Use it as an excuse to enjoy your cheesecake!

I had all 4 pulled and it was a piece of cake. I've had bikini waxes that hurt more than that. Best of luck.

I had all mine pulled. It was painless and uneventful and I didn't take any meds. I started eating solid foods that night. Hope your procedure went well.

I had all 4 pulled at once when I was 19. The dr told me to put ice on 20 mins on, 20 mins off. I also had a lot of anesthesia bec they couldn't keep me under so I ended up being at the dr all day bec I couldn't stay awake afterward. They had to kick me out at 5 pm. I also ate a lot of mashed potatoes and pudding with a baby spoon for 3 days. I slept a lot that weekend and when I went back on Monday he said he never saw someone heal so fast. I guess your body heals faster when you are asleep. Relax and enjoy the time off.

Thanks ladies!!

How long did you all do the salt rinse for? I didn't have stitches put in since the tooth wasn't impacted and I wasn't really bleeding a lot; the dentist said I didn't need them. But I'm being VERY religious about rinsing 5-6 times a day esp after meals so as to avoid getting stuff stuck in there and/or developing a dry socket.
