WHEN TO EAT IF YOU WORKOUT LATE

When I workout, I usualy workout at hte gym with my mom after her work, dn that's usually around 6, and we get to the gym. The only thing is we have a quick high protein/ good carb snack before we go, and usually get back between 8:30 and 9:00. Sometimes as late as 9:30 if we take some classes. My question is is it bad to eat a salad, some steamed frozen veggies (broccoli cuts and french cut grean beans) and maybe a mini pakage of salmon, tuna, or something else that late at night. Even if it were 5:00 we would still eat this kind of stuff. Me and my mom are the kind of ppl who hate eating big meals, jsut little things every few hours. WE total snakers! Protein bars, drinks, mini snakcs like fat free cottage cheese, anything we eat daily. So anyway, sorry to get of the subject but is eating that late really bad? Or should I just have a protein drink and a slice of bread if I eat that late? any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm no expert, but I would definitely think your body would need a good meal like you describe, after your gym workout, no matter what time it is.:) Remember you are feeding the muscles and they can't grow with out proper nourishment. You are so active, I'm sure your body needs it and you can eat a ton with no worries.;-)

Is your mom a member of this forum? If not, she should be. She's raised a smart young girl.:) It's great you two get along and are both into fitness and health.

Thanks so much Sunnyside! That was so nice:). Accually my mom doesn't have a usernaem here since shes always at work, then working out at the gym, she really doesn't have time for the computer, but since I'm on school vacation, I'm basically on most of the day until I go to practice or the gym. I love talking to all of you:)! Again, thank you soo much. That was really nice!

Level 6

Hey Adri,

It has been a long time since I have been in gymnastics. Do they still have Classes I, II and III? And if so, which one are you in? Do you compete? Just curious.

A meal as you described, or a smoothie with a 4-to-1 carb-to-protein ratio, would be a good choice. Your body needs CARBS after a workout more than protein.

Thanks Kathryn. Your definatley right. I need more carbs than protein. So last night I had my protein shake and a cup of special K cerial a few banana slices and milk. (I didn't feel like veggies:-()

My gymnastics academy doesn't have the 1, 2 or 3 thing, we just go by levels, levels 1-10. I do compete and tis year I'm going to compete as a level 6, last year I was a 5. We compete in different states and cities, places like New York! It's so fun!

I wouldn't worry about the time of day that you're eating. I've always been very interested in this topic and have educated myself about it a great deal and have decided that WHEN you eat doesn't really matter, only WHAT you eat. What you mentioned about the veggies, salad, and fish is such a fantastic option--don't even look at the clock. You seem to eat extremely well so I wouldn't worry about how late it is when you eat. It's important to give your body a healthy reward after working out and your snacks and meals sound great. I often come home late from the gym and do the same thing. Keep up the good work and healthy eating!

Adri, I think it depends upon what time you need to be asleep. I think if you can be done with dinner by 9:00 pm, and you go to sleep at 11:00, you should be okay. But if you have to be in bed by 10 pm (because, say, your alarm goes off at 5 am), then all that digesting may interfere with getting good quality sleep. You are eating healthy, but veggies are hard to digest, and generally should not be eaten right before bed.
