When I eat/drink I get the hiccups.

A while back I posted about my lack of eating. Since last fall I've been back on track. I'm now remembering why I cut my eating back so much. I would get horrible hiccups that nothing would get rid of them. Drinking more water would make them worse. Holding my breath helped but they would return in 10 minutes or so. Well they are BACK! I'm going crazy! What is causing them? They really hurt after a while!

Help!

I'll tell you a surefire way to get rid of them. get a small glass of water. Bend from the waist down. Pike position, just not on a stability ball. Bring the glass up to you top lip, (which is now your bottom lip) & drink upside down a few sips. You'll be cured. It has something to do with the vagal nerve. Just don't ask me what.

Marlas right. A friend suggested I try this and it really works. In fact, it's the only thing that seems to consistently work for me.

Good luck,

When I was a kid and got hiccups, I'd would take a teaspoon of sugar. It worked! (I don't have any sugar around now!)

Wow! I never would have thought of that! Thanks! Why would that nerve give me problems when I consume something?

If this continues you may want to check with your doctor, there are a couple things that could cause this medically also, especially if they are painful :) .

I can think of one thing that may be the cause, but highly unlikely. When I was 4,5ish I was kicked by a horse in the solar plexis and not taken to the hospital do to our location. Every once in a while I would get really sharp pain there. Then when I started really getting into ab work with the stability ball the hiccups started. I still get sharp pain only not as often.

What could a dr. do if it was due to an old injury?

I seriously don't want to scare you just have you cover all your bases :) . Hiccups are the spasmodic, involuntary contraction of the diaphragm that is caused by irritation of the nerves that supply these muscles. The glottis suddenly closes and stops the inflow of air resulting in the sound of a hiccup. Most of us have hiccups at one time or another and this is usually a benign or harmless condition. Mild hiccups can be caused by such things as overeating, drinking fluids too quickly, alcohol ingestion, cigarette smoking, anxiety, exercising soon after meals, gastroesophageal reflux and others. On the darker side liver disease to cancer.

It could be something extremely simple but if it's continuing and disrupting your life with pain you need to have it checked out. There do I sound like a Mom now :* .

You didn't scare me. I've had horrible anxiety lately and I do drink water too fast and I sometimes do exercise 15-30 minutes after a meal. I've also found that if I eat more than the size of my palm I get hiccups so maybe I should really put more effort into that! As for smoking and alcohol- I'm underage and I'm NOT interested in starting that up.

Thank you,
