What kind of doctor for this?

Hi all. On New Year's Eve I broke a blood vessel in one of my fingers. It instantly turned purple, swelled to 2x its size, and itched like mad. But there was still circulation. Over the next few days it turned black and blue and then those ugly shades of purple and yellow - ick. But it has never fully healed. About once a day it goes numb, turns ugly yellow-white (ie little if any blood in it) and swells - but only a little. About once a week it feels like I've popped that blood vessel all over again. So after 6 weeks I think I should seek medical advice - but what kind of a doctor do you go to for that - anyone know?

Lorrie,

I'm sorry that happened to you. Sounds awful. I don't have a medical background, but if it were me, I would see an internist. He may send you on to someone else, but that's where I'd start. Whatever you decide to do, keep us updated.

Is an internist your family doc? Anyway I would see my general doctor and he could refer you. Sorry about your finger!

Sorry. I should have written Doctor of Internal Medicine. I guess the same as general doctor.

i think that you would definatly go see your PCP if your health insurane requires a referral to a specialist. If not your PCP will hopefully be able to either to direct you to the right professional. If its vascular you may need to go to a vascular surgeon. Or your pcp might refer you to a ortho md. That is my guess. I would make an appt though
