What do you think about IL Senetor Appointee

I don't know Mr. Burris too much. But I would think if he is a decent person, even he is qualified for Senetor job, he should not go for it because he was appointed by Blag. IL should have statewide election in this situation so that elected Senetor won't be tainted. What do you think?

Since i'm not from IL, I don't really have a very educated opinion, but I've seen the guy on The Today Show and The Rachel Maddow Show and he seems good. I haven't heard any negative opinions of him. I agree it's tough because Blago has appointed him, and B seems to like the controversy, doesn't he? But legally, there's nothing stopping the appointment. The special election will cost IL a lot of money, and I think they aren't too keen on spending it. 2008 was just a horrible mess all around, wasn't it?

I hope, I hope, I hope 2009 turns it all around.

I am from Illinois. He is OK, but I sure question his judgement about taking it. Plus he is 71, Obama is 47, young and excited about doing the job in politics. does not seem like an equal trade to me.

Of course, pay to play seems everywhere, look at New Mexico now.

The Ill Governor is innocent until proven guilty (regardless of what I or anyone else my have an opinion about). He is still the Governor and his appointment should stand pending the outcome of the case. Perhaps his appointee should take the Senate seat on a temporary basis until the case is settled.

I'm from Chicago, and I have a mixed take on it.

It's a catch 22. Blago takes the attention off of himself by making an appointment.

Burris can't NOT take the job and an't NOT attempt to do it with enthusiasm if he wants to continue any kind of political role. On the other hand, he has to be well aware of the fact that Reid has said he will not accept any appointment made by our buddy Rod. So he has to know that without a long, drawn out fight (that he has said he intends to put up), the seat will not be his.

Burris has a great resume and (so far as we know) good reputation. But, we all know how politics work in IL. I will give him the benefit of the doubt until we hear otherwise.

Fiscally, at this point, it would make the most sense to accept his appointment and move on with ejecting the clown. Quinn can't endorse him, since that would be seen as agreeing with Rod. But he also can't condemn him, and then turn around and re-appoint.
Unfortunatley, I think the quickest, cheapest and most sensical solution in this case (since is more than qualified) is to accept Blago's appointment and move on with getting him out of office.

According to today's NY Times, Reid "open for negotiation".

I don't think anyone appointed by Blag. should be qualified. But I agree, at this point, just do whatever cost less. Everywhere is pay-to-play, any way.

Well, the Senate rejected his appt today. Now Burris is appealing it. Fascinating stuff.

Now that I know more about Burris I'm not so sure he's a good guy. At this point he's just an opportunist. He's lost some pretty major elections in the past & I'm guessing he sees this as his last chance to serve in office so he's grabbing it, regardless of the process. It's kinda sad, but also kinda nauseating.

I have to admit though, Blago is like some kind of an evil genius. He knew what he was doing was legal, & he knew it'd be tough for Dems to reject an AA for the Senate. One thing is for sure, the creep sure has earned his place in history!

Too bad he didn't use his powers for good.

After hearing the Burris sound bites, it kind of all makes me sick. He sounds like he is out for his own glory. Look at the difference between him and Obama, and think about what kind of replacement he is for our state.

And Blago saying he likes all of this attention, geez, maybe I should move somewhere warmer with more sense.

I think nobody's face skin can be thicker than these politicians. They can turn and twist their words around based on what kind of situation they wanted to be. They kind of like jugglers to me. They can flip and flop us whatever they want. They thought we were all stupid and can be spinned by them.

I want to move out, too. But where in the world you can find clean place?

Oh man, I agree with this. I think he made a mistake taking the job and if he'd, instead, said "You know... I'm flattered but I think, given what is going on it would be best to wait until legal issues are settled." Frankly, his taking the job from Blago right after he complained bitterly about Blago, makes him look like an opportunistic political wh*re, selling himself to anyone willing to pay up. And that politician who implied standing in the way smacked of racism had my blood boiling. I know I wouldn't want to be joined publicly with one of the most shockingly crooked men to ever hold office. Not a crowning achievement in an otherwise distinguished career. I view his quickness to snap up the job as a serious character flaw. But I guess he figured this was his last chance and I think he's right to believe that, technically, there's nothing illegal about his appointment, as Blago wasn't convicted of anything at the time of his appointment. He's "in" but his reputation has been sullied.

And that guy from New Mexico is another one. He's has something to hide or he would have fought for his good name. Wouldn't you? And I don't even want to hear about the corruption in the present administration, or any other ("they did it and didn't get called on it so why are we in trouble for doing the same thing?" A first-graders rationalization being used by adults...), as a way of justifying bad character and questionable rewards. Besides, Commerce Secretary was a consolation prize (he really wanted Hillary's job) and I feared it would only be a matter of time before his resentment boiled over and he started becoming a fat hassle.

All I know is our country is in trouble and, though a certain degree of business as usual is certainly unavoidable, it cannot be standard practice in national government anymore. If it is, this country will never get un-stuck.

Should have read through all the responses before I posted. This pretty much states it. I just can't believe a person like Blagojevich even exists.

Oh Stacey, unfortunately we in Illinois know Blago exists and have lived with him for too many years. The state is a mess. A commentator on the radio had a comment last week. The Governor before him, George Ryan, was also crooked, but at least he did something in his job. He got along with lawmakers, ran the state, but Blago gets along with no one in Springfield, does not make any decisions, and when they force his hand in Springfield, he gets spiteful, and makes poor decisions. My husbands comment when he got arrested and why....oh now we know why it took him so long to sign anything or do anything...he was working all the angles to see what he could get out of it.....so sad.

I hope that this is not been brought to Washington, only time will tell.
