Walking

I just recently took up walking. I wish I could run (I'm just not built for running!) so I decided to take up walking instead. I was wondering if any of you could tell me how to get the most out of a walking workout because it just feels like I'm not getting enough of a workout when I walk. Thanks so much for your help! :7

One word: HILLS! These will make your lower body burn, the higher, the longer, the "better"}(
Other suggestions are speed intervals while you walk, being sure to keep very good form (arms bent 90 degrees making an arc from approx. shoulder to waist, keep your core tight, and focus on walking heel, toe), or even a weighted vest will help to increase your work load while walking. I've heard about walking poles as well, but have never tried them, so no advice there.
Good luck!

Try to increase the length of your stride a bit. Not too far, since you're also increasing speed. It'll make a difference for sure. Make sure you pump your arms, just like as if you were running, don't just swing them... you may be doing this already, of course. Like Cathe says, adding in the arms adds up to 12% in a workout!
