Lori, I replied in your other thread but I'll repeat it here. I think you should avoid exercise until you know what's going on with your arm. If you do have a disc problem, it could potentially be made worse by various and different exercises. I think you should wait for physician approval.
I agree with Michele but for future reference when you are given the green light to exercise, you can do isometric exercises for the upper body. I used to do Great Arms Garunteed put out by BeachBody and they show you how to do all of the exercises w/o weights but you are still working your muscles. It was great for a beginner to an exercise program and I'm sure it would be a great way to safely ease back into it for you as well!
I wouldn't worry about upper body weight work right now. I had to take about 6 weeks off a little while ago and was amazed at the memory my muscles had when I was able to workout again. It didn't take any time at all before I was back to where I started. I think your main concern should be finding out what is wrong with your arm and working on getting that fixed.
