Update on the vicious dog in my neigborhood

About a month ago I posted about being attacked while I walked my dogs. No one was hurt, but this was a horrible experience. I did speak with my neighbor who was "suprised" at her dogs behavor and that he was out of the yard. She never apologized BTW. But said she would speak to her husband about it.

Yesterday another neighbor calls me to "warn me". She proceeds to tell me that the lady next door to her was walking her two dogs down the street and went down that end of our subdivision. She has two dogs. One larger and a shitzu. Somehow the shitzu got loose from her and ran into these peoples yard. Well that blueheeler picked that little dog up by the neck and swung it around like a rag doll. The lady screamed at the dog and he dropped him and ran off. Poor puppy and lady. The dog is ok- couldn't hardly hold his head up for three days :(. So my neighbor says this lady wasn't gonna tell these people that this happened  I pleaded with her to tell the lady what happened to us and that she needs to let them know. Yes, her dog got away and was in their yard, but still. This just prooves that this is a dangerous dog. What if that had been a child that ran into that yard? OMG I hate to even think of that.

I hope she calls them. If I have any other incidents or see this dog out of his yard again, I am calling animal control.

OMG! That is really horrible! She should most definitely call animal control.

Just a suggestion, but perhaps you should start keeping a log of these incidents in the event you do end up in court.

If the little dog went into the big dog's yard, it's not at all surprising to me that the big dog did that. My big dog is a very gentle animal and I've seen him keep his cool when being attacked by smaller dogs that he could really hurt, if he wanted to. But one day I was walking him and a couple little yorkies tore out of their yard after him. He was leashed, and we weren't in their yard. My dog picked the little dog up by the neck and dropped it.

The little one wasn't hurt, but dogs don't look at it as "what a cute little dog, I'm bigger and it can't hurt me". They look at it as another dog showing aggression towards them.

I can't comment about the child theory. Dogs act differently towards other dogs than humans, and I've never seen this other dog. But since it did attack you once, so yeah, I'd be wary. But I'm just saying that simply because a dog defends himself on his own turf, he's not necessarily vicious. (that's generally speaking, of course)

I tend to agree with Donna on this one. I am a big believer in fenced yards and leashes.
In our VERY SMALL rural town, I am the ONLY person who walks their dogs on a leash.
Although I have larger dogs, I don't appreciate people allowing their dogs to run wild in a yard or outside a yard. The problem is that when I come walking up with my dogs on a leash, the loose dog comes OUT of their unfenced yard to challenge my dogs. Sometimes people think it is funny to see their little dog challenge my large (leashed) dog, but it really isn't. Have you ever tried to pull an 80 lb dog away from a curiosity? No fun! It has gotten so bad that I choose to avoid the town streets altogether and walk the doggies next to the moo-cows in the fields to avoid such confrontations. Note: My dogs are ALWAYS leashed or in a fenced yard. I do this for their protection as well as my piece of mind.

I know, Catherine...I was trying to get that point across. That the dog coming after you is a different situation than defending his turf against the other dog. I was trying to say that had the situation with the smaller dog coming onto the other dog's home area, had it been the ONLY incident with the dog, wouldn't indicate the dog was viscious.

Know what I mean? I'm really just trying to defend my own sweet boy that picked up that obnoxious little yorkie. I hate those little dogs. Them and cocker spaniels. They ALWAYS go after my big dogs.

The Dog Whisperer had an episode that addressed this. A woman with a pekinese would bring it to the dog park, and it would inevitably go trying to challenge the big dogs. Everyone thinks the cute little dog is so sweet. And when the big dogs started to lay down the law, the owner would come rescue it.

My corgi is not allowed to go after any other dog. She does it, because she's a herder and she's a puppy still - but I'm really trying to stop her. She's very bold and stubborn! My big dog bit her on the ear one day, and she totally deserved it. I didn't feel bad for her at all.

I see what you are saying Donna. I think it's one thing if a dog feels threatened. And it is natural for it to attack. But for a dog to attack just because another dog is in it's yard. That is potential for disaster. Maybe I watch too much Dog Whisperer LOL. But a dog should not attack just because another dog is nearby or in it's yard. That is a sign of an aggressive animal and that can easily escalate.

Yes, Catherine, I feel your pain. Walking your dogs (on a leash) should be enjoyable for you and your doggie! I hate when I have to continually tell my dog "no!" when the owners of the loose dogs don't have to say a word to their loose doggies. They really are not doing their doggies any favors either. They are not providing them protection or any sense of security. Major bummer :(

Instead of sulking about it, I decided many moons ago that it was easier to take our doggies for walks away from the town...the town will not enforce the leash laws and I am tired of complaining about it. x(

Good luck to you!

OK - I just read the temperment information on this dog. It sounds like the dog is acting very much in line with the temperment that is expected if not properly raised. Totally the owners' fault.

You are totally right, it is the owner's fault. Those cattledogs need to be properly socialized, they need at least 1 to 2 hours of exercise every day (and by that I don't mean roaming the neighborhood)and they need to be mentally challenged or they'll find their own jobs like terrorizing the neighborhood.

We have the same problem in our neighborhood with two Queensland Heelers and irresponsible dog owners. The owners know that they have attacked several times already and still take them outside without a leash (we do have leash laws here). Just last weekend my knucklehead of a neighbor was out with them again - without a leash, of course, and they went after me.

They have been reported to animal control already by at least one other neighbor, but so far animal control has done didldy squat.

Don't have much advise for you, I know how you feel, it sure takes the joy out of living in your house.

Take care,

Carola
