Triathalon/Marathon Runners: Race Times vs Training Times

Hello to all you endurance athletes!

My question is in regard to your race times when you are doing an event, whether it be a tri or a marathon.

Are your race times signficantly faster than your training times, or is it about the same?

I'm competing in my first tri in August and was kind of wondering about it.

Thanks in advance, Lynn M.

Hi Lynn, I can only help with marathon times! I have not done a tri yet, but I have promised my Pastor I would before I was 50, so I still have some time...:)

In marathon training you do speedwork that is usually faster than your marathon pace. On long training runs you are generally a bit slower than goal pace but should try to keep goal pace in the last 5-10 miles of a long 20 mile run. I have a site of a pace calculator that shows alot of different times to work on for your goal time; http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,,s6-51-58-0-1000,00.html

Good Luck in your Tri!!!

Thanks for the reply and link... will definitely be checking it out.

By the way, I think you would love a tri.. am only about 6 weeks into training, but its really nice to be doing all of the cross training.. I love running and have done a 1/2 marathon, but the tri has been great, the swimming and biking have been really nice changes for keeping cardio workouts fresh!
Thanks again and take care, Lynn M.
