TO ALL THE RUNNERS!!!!!

i like to pair my runs with maybe a few interval of imax or do whole workouts a few days apart. i also like to do cathe lower body workouts like PLB and Legs & Glutes to strengthen the lower body.

I have been thinking about this question all day. It really is comparing two very different things and I think that may be why so many have having a tough time answering. Cathe has some workouts that are fantastic at complimenting a running routine but matching it...hmmmm. See, running keeps your heart rate up for quite a while, keeps it high and constant. Running is also pretty intense, uses different muscles that step or kick boxing. Running strengthens the skeletal system and fine muscles and other tissue.

Now, Cathe's cardio workouts can certainly condition an exerciser so that starting up a running program is easier and less chance of injury. I did Cathe cardio for a few years and once I started running, I was able to do 5 miles right away. Most of my Cathe cardio was ImaxII.

Sorry if this is no help. It is a tough question!

I'm actually taking the time to answer this question instead of getting my butt out the door for a run. It is so HOT here in my neck of CA today so I'm dreading going out there!!

Anyway, I love to use any of the IMAXs. I believe these interval workouts are wonderful for increasing running endurance. I try to work one in every week.

I agree with Sarah. You just cannot find something to completely substitute for running. Plain and simple. You can easily find Cathe cardio to compiment. Personally, I try to do 1 IMax each week, about mid-week. If there is a day that I simply do not FEEL like running (for whatever reason) I will pop in an all-step workout that is steady-state cardio...my favorites are Rhythmic Step and Step Blast. I make every single move hi intensity. Then I'll return to my usual running on my next scheduled run. Not usually a problem.

In fact, after my Janaury marathon, I took 2 full complete weeks off of everything. On the third week, all my cardio consisted of all-step workouts. On the 4th week, I added running back in and was easily able to put in 6 miles.

I hope this helps.

Also, like Sarah (and thanks to people like Sarah and Carole) I have been adding all Cathe weight work around my running, my favorites for lower body are PLB and L&G also.

If you can't get your speedwork in, go for any of the IMAXes...
Also, and coremax/core exercises and the stretching segments are great for runners.

YES!!! STRETCH STRETCH STRETCH!!! It is said to improve running performance and decrease injury.

Anything "plyometric" will help running. The IMAX's, PlometricX (if you have the P90X series).

Now, let's all shed a tear for Elaine because it is so hot in her neck of the woods...on this fine day in February!:p While the rest of us have no use for lower body work because we are already freezing our asses off!

YEAH! BOO HOO for Elaine. It's too hot there for her, but here it's so cold my nose hairs froze this morning just dragging the garbage cans in and it gave me a horrible headache for about an hour!

LOL

I just got back from my run where I thought of something else to add. I don't do the IMAXs in place of any running speed work but use them to supplement. This may or may not be a good thing. It's always worked for me and until I got my heart rate monitor for Christmas all of my runs were speed work!!! I am now slowing my a*^# down every other run and must say I'm enjoying it more. Now we'll have to see if it affects my speed one way or the other.

Hey, I'm loving the sympathy. Martyrs always do!!!! :7

I'm glad you asked this question, I don't have an answer but I was very interested in what the others had to say. I just started running and I have done Cathe's lower body workouts but I hadn't tried PLB in a long time, so I'll try that one. Thanks for the responses guys.

Thanks for the replies - I have worked up a kick butt rotation for the next 12 weeks with Cathe/yoga/and running! Once I get home I will post it, but from what I have been reading and researching - this one might be a winner :)
