tivo questions for those who have it

Looking for a B-day gift for my Husband [who has everything]. Thinking of buying Tivo so he can have a life AND NASCAR:) I don't know a thing about it. I'm looking on the internet for info. Does anyone have it? Do I need a special service from cable? Our community dues pays for cable so we have no box. Just service. Is this enough? Sorry to be so clueless. I'm not much of a TV fan. Thanks for the help.

I believe that depending on whether you have cable or satellite makes a difference as to which machine you buy. I would call the cable company and find out from them. There will most likely be a small monthly fee (mine was $5 a month for satellite), and you probably can buy the machine from them.
TIVO (it may be called something else/digital recorder maybe) has different features for cable than it does for satellite. I know for my parents recorder, they have an "on demand" funtion that was not offered through satellite.

I LOV LOVE LOVE my tivo. I think you have to have directv or at least a satellite to get tivo but my sister have regular cable and got a dvr? through the cable company. FYI, directv has some kind of nascar ticket I believe. My DH has the season football ticket and gets every football game playing. I know I sound like a commercial for directv but I just love my tivo. HTH a little at least.

I don't know much about Nascar, as I am not a sports fan, but I have Time Warner cable, and we have what they call DVR...I think it stands for digital video recorder, on top of the cable box rentals, we pay an additional $10 a month for EACH of our (2) DVR boxes for the service itself. Since cable is included with your community fees, I would ask them how to go about doing the addition of the DVR first.
Happy DVRing!!! :) :)

I took your advise and called cable company. They r out of boxes and don't know when they will be back into stock. They said they will not service other boxes. Do u anticipate my needing service? I'm thinking I'll just go ahead and buy tivo from Target. Opinions?

I got an email from Tivo yesterday that said the TIVO box is free if you pay for one year's service in advance....

You have to pay for a service - either with a TiVo or a DVR. I have Comcast cable and have DVR and love it and wouldnt trade it for anything. I love being able to set a season pass for shows and then it records every new episode for you.

I have Directv and TIVO (I've had it for about a year and a half. I should have gotten it much sooner.) I love it. Because my DH needs every channel (we have the premium package), I don't pay anything for TIVO. I TIVOed all of Cathe which is why I now bought everything I taped. It is very user friendly. You can tape two shows at once plus watch something you talready taped. Get it. You won't regret it.

TIVO has changed how I view TV in a big way. I never watch 'live' tv anymore. I TIVO everything then view later. That way I can skip by all the commercials.

Also when you do watch live tv there's a 30 minute buffer that TIVO keeps. If you miss something, you can back it up and watch again. Or you can hit pause and come back to it later.

BTW I have TIVO with my DirectTV satellite service. They charge me $5 a month for it. Well worth it IMO.

AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH! I"M GOING INSANE!!! I have spent the last 2 hours looking for dvr players. I looked at tivo and others listed on line. I started thinking I should find one with a built in DVD player to save space. It looks bad to have too many pieces stacked up. This is driving me CRAZY! I thought this was going to be easy. UGH..........
