Thinking of going "almost" vegan

SRP

Cathlete
I'm thinking of doing a radical change in my diet, and I think it want it focused around veganism. NOT vegetarianism, which I am, mostly, already. But I know I need some good reference material to make sure I get it balanced properly. Can anybody recommend some good books?

At this point, I don't really want to be a true vegan, but I think I would like to try to make several meals a week vegan and see how it goes.

RE: Thinking of going

Vegan Planet by Robin Robertson is a great resource! Full of lots of great information, substitutions, and recipes (over 400!). Also, vegweb.com has exclusively vegan recipes in a searchable format.
I've been vegan of and on at first, and exclusively now for about a year and half total. Before that I was a vegetarian since birth, trust me, you'll love the creativity and new choices before you!

RE: Thinking of going

I have both Eat To Live and Vegan Planet!! Great books and I cook from Vegan Planet regularly. The Vegan Sourcebook by Joanne Stepniak is also good. I enjoyed The Food Revolution by John Robbins too. I've been veagn close to 2 years and have so far loved the food choices...:)...Carole

RE: Thinking of going

I discovered an e-book called Enlightened Kitchen that had wonderful vegan recipes. I have made several of the muffins & the stirfries and even my daughter loved them. It has a lot of info and sources as well.

RE: Thinking of going

Ditto on the other books mentioned. I also think "Becoming Vegan" by Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina is good. It has some menu plans and a lot of info about vitamin and mineral requirements that is explained very simply. I have not read "The Vegetarian Sports Nutrition Guide," by Lisa Dorfman, but a friend recommended it to me.

I have gradually shifted to eating a vegan diet and feel much more energetic.

RE: Thinking of going

I second "Becoming vegan," a great reference.

"Thrive" by Brendan Brazier discusses a vegan diet for athletes.

Check out the book offerings at www.veganessentials.com or www.veganstore.com .

"Vegnews" is a great vegan magazine. You can get a free sample copy by going to their website. If you can get Issue 47, Jan/Feb 2006, it's the annual health and fitness issue with lots of good info in.
