The Da Vinci Code

As a random movie thought, I generally don't like seeing movies that are hyped beyond belief in commericals, etc. Sometimes the more obscure ones that you don't hear about end up being da bomb. Not all, but I find this often to be true.

Live with sincerity, love with passion, and dance like you mean it.

I LOVED the book - ) It was an easy quick read - and I have always liked fiction that draws the imagination to question anything - be it fiction or fact.

I loved the movie too! Tom Hanks was perfect for the role - IMO - I cannot picture a smoldering guy - that would be too cheesy for my taste.

I love seeing the Catholic church squirm ( I have TONS of catholic relatives ) If its just fiction - then why are they making such a huge stink about??

I love anything that stirs the pot and makes people question or think - I have studied religion extensively in college and continue to read any controversial piece on it.......I love history and drawing my own conclusions from different materials written about it - its like putting a puzzle together.........

By the way - IMO - any history book that claims fact is always written from a certain viewpoint or angle - rarely will two people see the same story in the same light - IMO -

Christine,
I was also fascinated by the book as it related to the treatment of women. The whole idea of a feminine deity captured my imagination and delighted me. The more I think about it, the more I think the story spoke to me on a very deep and personal level. I also think the discussion on this topic is good. In fact, I think that anything that causes people to think is good. :)

cute work out clothes are good for AT LEAST an additional 10-15 calories burned!

I agree with Nance on this one. Couldn't care less about the controversy itself, though!! :p

And I don't think it spoke to me on a personal level...

And I enjoyed Angels & Demons waaaay more. I still wonder how anyone could even draw the title, LOL.

And if you liked this stuff, you should rent National Treasure with Nicolas Cage. ;-)

I agree with everyone reminding us that the book is FICTION.

I also understand why a Christian might be offended. Kudos to any Christian who is well-read enough to effectively shoot down the story.

However, I strongly feel that the Catholic church has brought this on itself. The problem is, Catholics were taught for centuries that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. (I was taught that in the 70's.) Only recently has the Catholic church admitted it was mistaken. An intelligent person might well ask, if they lied about that, could they be lying about everything else?

To be clear, I doubt that Jesus and Mary Magdalene sired children, but I do think Mary was a close disciple and deserves more credit than she's been given. Recently discovered documents will back my opinion.

Dan Brown saw an opening in the way Mary Magdalene has been portrayed. He has drove a Mack truck through that opening and is now laughing all the way to the bank. It must be hilarious to him that even people like me, who love to remind everyone that it's FICTION, can't resist the arguments for and against his FICTIONAL book.

(I type FICTION in all caps to remind myself that I am arguing that a book, which describes itself as fiction, is indeed FICTION. How silly of me.)

I just have to say that I think Tom Hanks is pretty hot. Cute, funny, articulate, probably smart and has a nice family man image. What's not to love?

Just to clarify on the smoldering remarks I made earlier, I was not actually thinking of this particular character but rather of Tom Hanks in general. I think he is great in romantic comedies like Sleepless in Seattle or character roles like Forrest Gump, but I have a hard time taking him seriously in anything else.

My objection with Hanks is that I don't see him as the dashingly handsome, intellectual type. When I read the book, that's how I pictured the leading man.

I like Hanks but just not for this portrayal. Also, he's a lot older than what I pictured when I read the book.

Just kind of threw me off :)

I read the book a few years ago and enjoyed it very much as an "escapist" novel. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie in the same way that I'm looking forward to seeing X-Men III.

I think Audrey Tautou was a great choice for Sophie's character (I've really liked her in the few films I've sen her in), but I'm still not so sure about Tom Hanks. Personally, I think it would have been funny to cast Harrison Ford as Langdon, since the character was described in the book as "a Harrison Ford in Harris tweed". :)

I have nothing to add regarding the controversy, but I pictured Harrison Ford in this role as opposed to Tom Hanks. Though I'm not sure how that goofy hairstyle would have looked on him! Ha!
