The Auld Lang Syne 2K5 Mish-Mosh

Folks, I can't believe I did this this a.m., but I did it and I'm skyin'. Hope this might inspire those who need an idea for a ring-out-the-old-ring-in-the-new challenge. Total cardio focus, with a LOT of plyo work to really bang the thigh muscles; as per usual, this works best with a 5-disc changer and is not for the impact-averse.

Circuit Max warm-up and hi/lo segments, fast-forwarding thru the first resistance cycle
KPC hi/intensity drills AFTER the warm-up
Kick Max Blast Challenge
Boot Camp cardio only premix

Running time: ~72 minutes.

In fact, at the end of this this a.m. I realized I could've gone a little further, so the next time I do this I'm gonna do the floor kickbox on Circuit Max before switching over to KPC. That will kick the running time up to about 77 minutes.

Have fun, and have a SAFE and Happy New Year!

Love,

A-Jock

Question about how you use your changer. I asked for one, and got it for Christmas; just so I could do your mishmoshes :0) But I am wondering, do you just skip to the next DVD, or do you program yours to do a sequence. Mine will apparantly only "program" within one DVD. I did get the Sony.

Thanks for any info.

Oh, and I just HAVE to get Circuit Max; it is next on my list.

A-Jock -
Darn. I need a fancy DVD player. And I need to replace all my VHS with DVDs. I WANT to do your mishmoshes, I'd LOVE to do them! But I can never come up with quite the same zip using my current setup. Although I have thought about tacking the Kick Max blasts onto the end of KPC - may do that this weekend!

Hi, Ivorygorgon (love the screen name, by the way) -

In terms of programming the entire workout the Sony way, alas I'm the original Bald Bonehead. Here's what I do: I load all the discs in the player in the order I need them, then I cycle to each disc, beginning to play the segment I want and quickly hitting the "stop" button and advancing to the next disc with the "disc-skip" button, then I begin to play the next segment and quickly hit the "stop" button, etc. etc. until I have "marked" the point at which I want to begin on each disc. Then I cycle back to the first disc, grab a slug of water, start the workout and go. Once I get to the end of each segment I just "disc skip" to the next one. The Sony player I have "remembers" where I stopped in each segment and goes right to that point when I disc-advance to it. Does that make sense? Oddly enough, my Sony player "remembers" this "disc resumes at this point" for 5-7 days depending on the disc.

And yes, you have to get Circuit Max. On DVD, with its country cousin Cardio Kicks. One of my alltime favorite mish-moshes, simple though it is, is to do the cardio/resistance cycles of Circuit Max substituting barbell squats, plie squats and lunges rather than the compound upper/body resistance drills with light dumbbells that Cathe and Crew do; then at the end of the last cardio/resistance cycle and before the chest/back work, I go to the Cardio Kicks power drills segment, bang that out and finish off with a final set of squats, plie squats and lunges. Another Cathe-ite tried that a few weeks ago, and her only comment was, "Whoa Nellie!" There's something about the choreography of C-Max, as well as some wicked funny cueing, that makes the time fly by, and IMHO the cardio output is one of the highest in Cathe's vast arsenal.

Happy Mish-Moshing!

Shannon - the problem is, with Cathe workouts you get more fit, and in the time it takes for you to switch your videos out your heart rate plummets to near resting levels. That's a good thing in terms of an indication of your cardiovascular fitness (the quicker the recovery after the cessation of the workout the fitter you are) but it's a bad thing if you want to continue to improve CV fitness.

I switched out my entire Cathe collection from vids to DVDs about three years ago, and in doing so blew my cardiovascular fitness to the moon, precisely because I could go more quickly to more intense segments (at times eliminating recovery portions, such as those in I'Max and I'Max 2) and keep the HR elevated.

Although I'm a real cheapskate, the benefits of going DVD-Cathe with a multi-disc changer make the expense worthwhile, because you can never be too fit, and your lack of medical expenses in the future for heart, circulatory and respiratory problems will make the upfront expense a steal.

A-Jock - yes, I've experienced exactly that when I try to switch out. I first play my chosen VHS segment, and have a DVD ready and waiting in the DVD player. I switch as fast as I can, but still, the heart rate does plummet.

Do you have any idea how much $$$ I spent in 2005 on Cathe routines? I don't, and I don't want to know! But I'll have to admit, I haven't been to the doctor....

Another thing - Cathe is making me finally advance technologically!:) DVD players, heck - DVD's for that matter! And I even bought a microwave so I could throw dinner together faster, thus increasing my workout time after work! Ha!

AJock, thanks for the info. My understanding, from reading my manual, is that I will have to do exactly that, unless I am programming within a DVD.

Well, off to buy Circuit Max. :)

I'd far rather spend my time and money with and on Cathe than in and for a doctor's office. Considering how blisteringly expensive sedentary-lifestyle-related illnesses and chronic conditions are, what I spend on Cathe and other fitness stuff is peanuts.

Happy Auld-Lang-Syning!

Well said. Now I don't feel so bad on everything I have accumulated in less than a year! :)

I'd love to try this, but don't have Circuit Max (yet). }( Soon!

Thanks for posting this.

Happy New Year!

I too am working as hard as I can to get all the Cathe w/o's on DVD and then get that wonderful five-disk changer. I want to do some of these mish-moshes. I would have a problem too with heart rate plummetting. I am back down to my the low end of my training zone in no time after an interval blast and if I have to stop in the middle of a w/o for any reason, my HRM is beeping at me in just what seems like seconds indicating I am down below my training zone.

I also want Circuit Max. Shannon, I've spent a small fortune in acquiring Cathe's w/o this year too, I really don't have that many more left to go. DH asked me how much money I have in "those things", I laughed and asked him how much money he has in his horses!! That shut him up!

I've programmed my disc changer the 'Sony' way also by queueing up the way A-jock does. Honestly the way A-jock told you is faster than pre-programming. The only advantage I've seen by programming the Sony way is when I'm switching a lot between chapters of the same DVD. Programming within the same DVD makes the switch a lot faster than I can hit the remote. But if you're doing a workout across different discs you will always get that short hesitation as the disc changer moves to the next disc. The downfall to pre-programming (on my machine at least) is that you have to enter every stinking chapter and then you get a little 'blip' in the motion between chapters when the program plays. I find that annoying when I'm doing many chapters that fall together in the same sequence. For example, if I programmed intervals 1 thru 5 of IMAX2 I would get a blip between the step combo and the interval, between the interval and the recovery, and between the recovery and the next step combo (they are all separate chapters). On the other hand, by queueing up at the beginning of interval one, I'd just wait until after interval 5 recovery is over then hit disc skip to the next workout sequence I want to do. No annoying blips that way.

If anyone is hesitant to forking out the bucks for a disc changer, I think the cost ($46 on eBay) has more than paid itself. It opens up a whole new world of different and challenging workouts. Besides who can possibly get bored with all the different workouts you can create with the changer? That in itself has saved me money so I don't have to buy more DVDs to keep me motivated LOL.

BTW A-jock, that looks like yet another challenging mish mosh. I'll have to try it tomorrow. Thanks!

My only comments:

1} I'm glad I don't have a sony disc changer.

2} I have all of Cathe on DVD, but still have the old VHS's and can revert back to them when doing your prescribed mish moshes.

3} I'm glad I don't have circuit max. (okay that's a lie - I have it, but can conveniently misplace it when I need to. Like now. :p :p :p

Just kidding:

AJ you are too much!! When I do these mishmoshes I'm always happy when I have to change up disc's because I can catch my breath and it's probably the only way to keep from passing out. Happy new year to you too!!! Thanks for another outstanding workout! This may be the year to break down and buy a sony disc changer - maybe ;-) ;-)
