Swimming

I am wondering how many of you add swimming to your summer workouts? Do you replace it with some lifting or cardio? I guess I am a little confused on if I should use this as a cardio or strength workout. My heart rate goes up some, but I mostly feel my upper body working. I have been swimming twice a week doing laps. I did 800 meters on Sunday after a run. It felt great.

I would love any good swimming or pool workout ideas from anyone. (Aquajock).

I would love to get a good pool workout in over the weekend while we are in Vegas.

Thanks in advance for your ideas and knowledge in this area.

Swimming is overwhelmingly an upper body activity, so vary your water training program by alternating series of swimming laps with kickboard laps that use the legs only to propel you across the pool if you want more balanced workload between the upper and lower body, as well as more of a productive cardio challenge. Flutter kicks, frog kicks and dolphin kicks (used in the butterfly stroke) are all good kicking protocols.

Also consider doing aqua jogging with an Aqua Jogger float belt, which mimics the motion of running in a zero-impact deep water environment to recruit the thigh and glute muscles more. Also also consider adding in treading-water drills as well, to alternate again between upper and lower body workouts in a vertical, zero-impact deep water environment.
