Today (7/3) my children took me on my first major hike since my hip replacement in 11/05. We climbed Mt Mousilauke (4802 ft) in Warren NH. The climb was a 2500 ft verticle increase on a 3.6 mile trail. About 8 miles total.

I'll be on ibuprofen (vitamin I) for a couple of days but the "burn" feels great

Congratulations!! And what a great way to spend the day with your kids. This is a great post-op milestone. :)

Congrats!!! Sounds like that would be a lot of fun to do with your kids. Unfortunately, mine's not quite old enough yet!!

Congratulations Dave!!! I've been meaning to ask you since you mentioned that you can't cycle or swim (and I imagine running and step are BIG no no's) what types of things can you do for cardio? Just curious. I always wonder if my hip were to get so bad - heaven forbid - what on earth would I do??? That's why I really listen to it. But obviously being healthy and staying fit is important to you so you have figured something out. And hiking looks to be like something you can do sometimes?

Congrats Dave that is awesome! I also love your quote on your signature. I think you should go post this in the motivation needed thread!! :) Happy 4th!

Good job Dave, congratulations. I like to hear success stories about hips, I'll have mine done on 7/23.
There are some real fantastic recoveries out there. I went to a fitness seminar a few weeks ago (got my pilates instructor certificate:)) and I saw Calvin Wiley's hip-hop dance claas - he is after a bilateral hip replacement. I was just amazed by his performance. Nobody could ever tell that he had such a serious surgery. I also know a few ex marathoners from my old running club who are crazy enough to train for new marathons with their new hips, but I think that is totally crazy.
My doctor is not "forbidding" running again but certainly doesn't recommend it. www.dancerhips.com has some really good stories too.

So congratulations again, way to go.
