Sprint triathlon bike ?

For those of you who have done this, how many people use a mountain bike or fat tire bike? I don't have $$ right now to invest in a road bike, but I don't want to be laughed off the road. Please tell me other people use "regular" bikes for the sprint tri! (My bike is heavy, so I know I'll be slower, but I really only care about finishing at this point).

Thanks!

Sandra, I use my hybrid bike for triathlons--it has pretty fat tires. It definitely slows me down, but I'm okay with that. At one point I bought a road bike and saw a big difference, but I ride on kind of rough terrain (even around town--it's a river trail that's paved, but the pavement is not well maintained), so I prefer my fat tire bike.

And, don't worry about being laughed at. In my experience, triathlon racers are very supportive and friendly. Some are super competitive, but I just get out of their way and let them do their thing. I just like to finish, like you.

You'll do great! Be proud of yourself that you're getting out there. Most people only dream of doing stuff like that. And remember to have fun.

Sandra - My house is on the bike route for a local triathlon series (they do 5 or 6 a summer) and I see a lot of hybrid/fat tire bikes go by. :)
