Sparrow and Gayle

Thank you ladies for the info on the squash vine borers. I checked the other plants and from what I can tell they look fine but they are so big it is hard to see all parts of the main plant. I think you are right though Sparrow that it is the borers that was in the plant I pulled but that one is long gone.

Who knew finding diatomaceous earth could be so hard to find. I found one place that has two bags but it is a bit of a drive. I do plan on getting a bag although it may be too late if I have the little suckers in the other squash plants. Arrrrg. Sometimes gardening is not fun.

I still have some seeds so I may be starting from scratch. Or maybe I will try to contact some aliens.

On a brighter note my tomatoes are looking and tasting yummy. And I just harvested my first batch of green beans yesterday.

Thank you again,
Annette

Hi Annette - You are welcome! You can mail order stuff like diatomaceous earth. I've bought garden stuff from places like Arbico Organics.

I'm envying your tomatoes and beans. Enjoy! :)

Annette,
(Yeah, I know this thread isn't addressed to me...but I'm nosey!)

On the diatomaceous earth (DE), I find it easier to use by mixing it with some water (I also put in neem oil, which is an insect repellant) and making it into a spray (you can get a plastic spray bottle for cheap). Just enough DE in the water to make the water milky colored. Then I can spray it on top or under or around any part of the plant (and avoid accidentally inhaling the powder--DE is non-toxic when ingested, but can be irritating to the lungs and eyes, the way it's irritating to insects).

HTH!

Didn't see this post yesterday! You're welcome! I get my DE mail order from a place called mypetchicken.com. :D

Enjoy all your veggies. We are still slow as can be here in CT. It has been positively fallish. My peas love it and my garlic is doing well but the tomatoes are straggling as are the jalapenos, peppers and popcorn. The life of a gardener! :)

Great Idea

Kathryn what a great idea. I will definitely try the mixture with the neem.

Last year I had a problem with fungi and my tomatoes. They are looking good now but I think I will take some preventive measure and brew up some garlic and baking soda. It should help if I have a potential problem again.

Sparrow I love love love and let me say again love popcorn. I am so envious.

Thank you again ladies.
Off to run errands. Yuck.
Annette

My peas love it
My peas are nonexistant, because a bunny (I think) ate them down to the ground when they were just sprouting. :( (s/he also ate my only kale plant...well, s/he left me ONE LEAF! And is now eating my broccoli leaves--which is fine, as I don't eat the leaves. I guess that bunny is a good judge of nutrition!)
