Running

Does anyone consider running part of lower body training or just as cardio? I wonder if it counts towards a day of lower body in regard to freestyle training. Thanks, Melissa

I personally consider my running to be a cardio workout. I know it does work the legs to a degree, but in my opinion leg workouts are necessary regardless.

There will certainly be varying opinions on this. Some would suggest that you don't run on the same day you do leg work and there are those that would do them both on the same day.

So...with that said, I guess it depends on what you wanting to accomplish. If running alone give you results you are looking for then continue in that manner. If you decide to add lower body training and find that it affects your running performance, then experiment with when to put them into your workout routine to make it more effective for you.

Hope this helps...

I go by how my legs feel, to tell the truth. If I run a lot, they're pretty tired and I don't want to add too much to that. If I don't run very often, I ramp up the lower body work.

Cardio seems to always involve the legs to a large extent, so I think it's up to the individual.

I don't generally consider running a lower body workout. I think doing lower body work on its own actually helps my running by making my legs stronger.

Thanks for the opinions. I don't actually like running, but recently added it to try and help my legs. Melissa

If you are going to continue running, I encourage you to make sure you still do some strength training for those legs. After I eased up on lower body work, the running injuries started coming! However, it may depend on how many miles you are getting in. regardless...I'd treat them as separate.

Running just like step for me is cardio. I wouldn't feel like running would replace a Freestyle workout. It would be separate cardio like stepping. Sarah is quite right as strength training the lower body will help prevent injuries. I have run and lifted wieghts for many years without alot of injuires..until of course I hit my 40's...x( :+ :7 ...Carole

I have to agree with the majority here. And especially with Sarah. Include leg weight work to strengthen the muscles and prevent injury.
