Ricochets vs Up and Back

Okay, this is probably a really dumb question, but I don't get the difference between ricochets and up and back (or whatever they are called). When I watch Cathe do the two moves I see there is a difference, but I can't get myself to do them differently. I end up doing up and backs when Cathe says ricochet and I can't figure out how to do one. This is really frustrating to me as I can do anything else she does, but can't get this x( .

Can someone explain the difference? Sorry I know that it is really hard to describe moves in words, but I am desparate!!

TIA,

Karin

There's a difference? I'm trying to visualize the moves, and I get the same one each time in my little brain. Maybe she called them up and back's in her older routines (like MIC) and ricochets in the more recent ones... beats me.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the Ricochets where you place a foot on the step, (pivot with your back to the tv), keeping that foot on the step, place the other foot on the back side of the step and return to start? Does that make sense? The Up and Back move, both feet travel over the step and off the step onto the floor with the farthest leg travling off of the step first.

I want to get my step out right now,and have my husband read it back to me while I do it, to make sure I typed it correct. :)

does this help?

Karin:

It is the exact opposite move. Your body turns forward for a ricochet and backward for an up and back. Try this. Put your left foot on your step. To do a ricochet, move your right foot forward when you start to turn (not up and back).

I hope this helps! :)

RE: Ricochets

I have given up on doing these differently. I just can not seem to not do a ricochet when she says up back x( I figure as long as I am working hard it doesn't matter.

Yes, this does help. I get it now!!! Woohoo! Now I just need to remember to do it when she cues it. Thanks so much for explaining that to me. I had a huge mental block.

RE: Ricochets

For an up and back you put your left foot on the step and the right foot goes behind your left foot and taps the ground. Almost like a curtsey.

RE: Ricochets

I have a Charlene (Forget her last name) step tape (Crazy for step) and I think she calls this move a "curl weave" that somehow clicked with me in how it's supposed to look.

I am glad that I could help! I know about those mental blocks. It is always fun to finally have a lightbulb moment though! :)

I also want to share with jj that my post was in response to Karin’s original struggle with being able to do an up and back but not a ricochet. I thought it would help her to know that a ricochet is basically the same move in the opposite direction. I am sorry that you perceived my response as “setting you straight” as that was not my intent. I hope you were not offended. I see that you are a new member, and I hope this will not discourage you from continuing to share with us. Perfection is not expected or required here, and there is no need to apologize. I would be sad if I unintentionally hurt your feelings. :-(

Blessings,

RE: Ricochets

Heather,

That was kind of you to send those words, thanks. I LOVE Cathe Workouts and I am excited that I am part of this forum now. I appreciate your words, and you have me thinking about what exactly I am doing when it comes to those ricochets! All I know, is I love them.. even if maybe I'm doing them backwards or whatever... I am learning in everything, Progress, NOT perfection.

Karin, have fun with them too!

Have a good evening.
