Platemates - I'm confused!

workout junkie

Cathlete
I'm working on my Christmas list already and was going to put platemates on it. When I went to various websites looking for these, the lightest that any place had was a pair of 1.25# each.

After searching previous threads on this, I thought they were available as a pair of 5/8# each for a total of 1.25#. I hope I'm explaining that correctly...

Can someone please help me - I'm confused. Blame it on being Monday...

TIA,
Melissa

Hi Melissa,

Yes, the size you want is available -- I have 2 pairs in that size. I'm sure Amazon has them. I bought mine locally at a fitness store.

The smaller sizes are available--or at least USED to be: I bought mine about 3 years ago. If you can't find them, you could also put just one of the 1.25# plates on a dumbell, hold it off-center (so the weight is balanced) and use it that way.

Hi Melissa,

You might also want to check out Pace weights, which come in half-pound increments:

http://paceweights.com/information.htm

I ordered some last week and they just arrived on Saturday, but I haven't had a chance to use them yet in an actual workout. (I was going to post a review of them once I've used them a few times since some other forum members wanted some feedback on them.)

I did fiddle around with them a bit, though, and I really like them. They are very sturdy, and you can put just one on each dumbbell and not feel like you're off balance.

The S&H was quite pricey (about $13), but it really does save on the cost of buying a few more dumbbells, and I figure that it will allow me to slowly increase my weights.

Hope this helps!

Kathryn and Michelle,

Thanks for the suggestions. I've checked out local fitness stores and can't find them. Checked about four popular websites that people here suggested in previous threads, no luck. When I get home I'll search some more, but I wanted to make sure first that the smaller ones actually existed and that I wasn't totally confused. How typical if they stopped making them now that I want them...

Ok, better get back to work now...

Leanne,

Thanks for the link - those look neat! I like the idea that they come in 1/2 pound increments. Probably more versatile than the platemates are.

Which set did you get (or did you buy them individually) and did you get the carrying case? 20 bucks for a case seems pricey, but it would be nice to store them in. The set of 9 should be good enough for me, but why 9? Why not a set of 10? Seems a little weird that it's an odd number. No big deal though.

Please post some reviews once you actually try them. Maybe I'll wait to give DH my wish list...

Thanks!
Melissa

Hi Melissa,

It did seem very odd that they only came in a set of nine, so I ordered the set of nine + one extra, all without the carrying case. (Like you said, the case just seemed unnecessary and expensive!) I won' be using them until later this week, but I'll be sure to post about how I like them!
