Painting/decorating question

DS wants us to repaint his room - he has quite the cool castle on his wall right now, but is outgrowing it. He wants a space room. I'm ok with that. I was thinking of a dark blue on the ceiling, fading down to a medium blue, then to a lighter blue at the bottom, to get kind of a twilight feel. I'm not sure how to fade the colors into one another. I don't want stripes, I want a gradual change. I'm thinking to paint each color in a roughly straight line, and then take a dry paintbrush or even a wallpaper brush and drag it thru the wet paint to make them blend. But I'm not sure it will work. I know EXACTLY what I want to do, but I'm not sure how to make it work. Kinda looking for an ombre kind of blend. Anyone know how to do this? Not a painting technique I've ever tried.

You could try the rag or sponge method for the fade. I have a sagebrush scene with blue sky in our office and used the sea sponge. Just a thought! You are a cool mom by the way...my mother put ugly wallpaper in my childhood room. LOL!

I have no idea how to do it but maybe practice on a canvas or a piece of drywall. I think you can get it cheap from Lowes or Home depot. It sounds really cool, my son would love a room like that!

I was thinking you could use a roller, with very little paint on it to get the fade. Just use less and less paint to get it thinner and thinner as you blend it in. Roll it lightly, instead of heavily.

That's what i'd try. But I may be making it less complicated than it should be.

I've never tried it but what I've been told by a professional faux finish painter is that you mix the dark color that you use at the top with the medium color in the middle to paint the area between the darker top of the wall with the medium color at mid wall. Then to go lighter toward the bottom of the wall you take the medium color and mix it with the light color to paint the area between the baseboard and mid wall. Does that make sense? But like I said, I've never tried it so I can't say whether or not it will work like he said. I would do a practice wall first. But I would definitely use that brush you mentioned so you can drag out the lines because you don't want to be able to see any hard lines. And just thinking while I'm typing, you may actually end up with 5 or 6 varying colors just so you can stage it better. For example when painting the bottom half of the wall you would have 2 colors with one being more of the mid wall paint and less of the lightest color mixed in and when you paint the bottom third of the wall you have more of the lighter color mixed in and less of the darker and then just above the base would be all lighter with nothing mixed in and use that brush to brush out the hard lines. It's probably a 2 person job so you have time to work the paint while it's still wet. But definitely a practice wall first.
