P90X series weights as compared to any of Cathe's

The P90X series has room for a lot of variation, you can go really heavy or lighter. It gives you more time to complete the set because you really do go at your own pace. Some of the exercises are different and ofcourse Tony is not Cathe. I really like Cathe's personality but in the end I'm in it for the workout and the effectiveness of it. P90X is very effective for the upper-body, the lower body is a combination of plyometrics and some weights but not as intense as Cathe gets with her legs, not nearly as intense. All in all it is a very good program. Oh yes and the ab routine, you will definitely feel.

I have just started my first week of the P90X rotation and it's really very impressive the way they put it together. I was just checking out the other workouts and they have just the right touch of variety in each DVD. But it works together and complements each other.
It isn't cardio intensive but I think that's because it's more strength training oriented. The leg workout isn't as tough as what Cathe gives us but it is different and pretty good. I liked the change. In comparison to what's out there as far as home workouts go...this series is excellent. To compare it to Cathe...it ranks just as good. With higher marks for how it all works together as a rotation. The production and presentation gets high marks.

Faves: ( so far )
1. Legs & Back
2. Plyo X
3. Core Synergistics
4. Shoulders & Arms

As Mic said, there is a lot of leeway in how you can lift with P90X.
I found that I could lift heavier with P90X than I've ever been able to lift with Cathe. I've done 35# one-arm rows with P90X, but I use 30# or even 25# for Gym Styles. I was able to do 15# 1-arm tricep extensions and 20# dumbbell curls (for a set!) with P90X, but I can't get that high with Cathe.

Aside from the "work at your own pace" style of P90X, I think there are two factors that make this possible. One factor is the work-to-recovery ratio. In P90X, you always take the time to write down what weight you used and how many reps you did after each set. There are also recovery periods for dynamic stretching after several sets of exercises.

The second factor is the arrangement of exercises, which also allows for recovery. When you do P90X chest/shoulders/triceps, instead of doing all the chest work before going on to shoulders, etc., you do one chest exercise, then one shoulder exercise, then one triceps, then repeat the sequence, then take a recovery period. Same with chest/back, back/biceps, shoulders/arms.

I love the whole P90X philosophy of working hard, and recovering and restoring (with in-workout stretches and rests, with yoga, with recovery weeks).

I agree with Mic that P90X is great for upper body, but, although I found the leg exercises challenging at times, and they firmed my quads, they didn't keep my butt where and how I like it to be! A perfect combo would be Cathe for lower body and P90X for upper body.

Thanks so much for the feedback! I'm going to try and buy this piecemeal- I picked up Plyometrics X and Cardio X today from ebay. I don't need the diet plan - South Beach seems to be doing pretty well so far!!! Or the energy supplements - using Billy Blanks' energy pill. So do you just do the workouts in order 1-12?

Hi Lisa....Kathyrn explained P90X very well...they have 3 different rotations you can follow. Personally I would go for a rotation instead of doing the workouts 1-12...:)...Carole

Would someone mind sending the rotations to me? I'm going to do this the cheaper way- through ebay! :) Just got Plyometrics and Cardio X yesterday.

I have it. It's a pdf file so let me know if you can open that and I'll email it to you...:)...Carole

Sanchia....no, these are just the P90X rotations that come with the P90X DVD's. So, don't know if you still want them.

Lisa...I am emailing it to you in a few minutes!...:)...Carole

>The rotations you mentioned on pdf, are they P90X/Cathe
>rotations?

Sanchia, If you are interested in a "P90X-like rotation" using the Hardcore workouts, I posted one in the rotations forum a while ago.
