overextended elbow

Was playing with kids in the pool yesterday and it felt like I hyperextended my elbow throwing my daughter in the water. It stil hurts a lot (sharp, stabbling pain) when I straighten out my arm. Should I just ice and take an anti-inflammatory? Anyone experienced this before?

I'd go with the standard RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) for the first 24 hours, then add alternating ice and heat (to bring blood to the area). You can also try slapping a magnet on it--one of those flat ones used for advertising purposes--which also brings circulation to the area. If it doesn't get a lot better in a few days, definitely have it checked out.

Are you saying magnet therapy actually WORKS?! I never thought it did. That would be pretty cool.

Although, I'd probably go a little overboard and stick myself all over. ;)

I've been taping fridge magnets to my shoulder at night. It does seem to help. And no need to buy any "special" magnets with high "gauss" numbers. The fridge magnets have a magnetic field more similar to the human body and therefore work well.

I've got a little tiny one right now on a vein port in my leg that has calcification in it (according to my regular doc: just like a b b shot bump under the skin to me). Accupuncturist says it will help my body break down the calcification and reabsorb it. It will take a while, though. And if it doesn't work, I'm only out the $3 cost of the little magnet (stuck to what looks like one of those tiny round band-aids), while my allopathic doc says if the spot starts to hurt or bother me, I can go to a vein specialist and have the vein removed! I'd rather try the magnet first, thanks!

About going overboard: my acupuncturist had one patient he put magnets all the way up and down her arm (he gives us his advertising magnets for that purpose).
