OT - Need to pick a book for my book club

Hi everyone. I have to pick a book for book club and I have looked at Barnes and Noble online and nothing really interested me. I think it is kind of hard because I am not really into reading right now, so nothing looks good. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of good books that they have read lately (either fiction or non-fiction).

TIA,

Karin

Karin, I just finished Snowflower and the Secret Fan which I thought was excellent. Here is the amazon.com link.

Also good, but non-fiction, is 1000 Years Over a Hot Stove: a History of American Women Told Through Food, Recipes and Rememberances. Here's the link:

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ‘Wow - what a ride!’ — Peter Sage

I would take Sparrow's advice because I think she's probably one of the most well read women on this forum. Looking over her past recommendations, her interests are diverse and I would love to have a peek at her collection of books.

Sparrow, I've had 1000 Years Over a Hot Stove: a History of American Women Told Through Food, Recipes and Rememberances on my wish list for ages.

Edited to correct my horrible grammar:eek:

I just finished Vanishing Acts, which was pretty good (kind of a weird sub-plot but not all of my friends had a problem with it) and also A Million Little Pieces, by James Frey, which is somewhat controversial at the moment. (He wrote as a memoir but later admitted some of it was fictional. It's still an excellent read, though.)

If you enjoy historical fiction, other options might include nearly anything by Phillipa Gregory. The Other Boleyn Girl is really well researched and written and quite interesting.

Good luck! I do so miss my book club days....

I'm actually laughing at myself for answering this post because I don't read anymore. But in the days when I used to read, I would always check out the Editor's Choice list of the New York Times, and their list of the best books of the previous year.

These days all I read are tax journals. Sigh. Someday, someday.

I'm with Nancy these days, but from my undergrad courses, a few of my faves were:

Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto
The Sweet Hereafter by Russell Banks
Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver
The Shipping News by E. Annie Proulx
The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco
The Brothers K by David James Duncan

I think a few of these have been made into movies by now, which is a shame. Great books don't always make great movies...

HTH!

These are three of my favorites:

Horse Heaven by Jane Smiley

The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood

Empire Falls by Richard Russo

Straight Man by Richard Russo

Without exception, very funny!

Some of my favourites:

A Complicated Kindness - Marion Keyes
Angry Housewives Eating Bonbons - Lorna Landvik
Clara Callan - Richard Wright (one of my all-time favourites)
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime - Mark Haddon
The Pillars of the Earth - Ken Follet - I am reading this one right now - and am absolutely loving it.

Enjoy.

Wow, thanks so much for everyone that took the time to reply. These suggestions will help me out alot. Happy reading! :)
