If there are any experts out there, here's a question I hope you can answer.

I'm trying to set up a network for internet only between three computers (mine and my kids's). So I connected the router. I installed the wireless USB adapters on my kids's computers without any problems. Now I want to install the USB adapter on my computer and it refuses to install the drivers from the cd-rom. I figured there was a problem with my cd-player, and bought a new one yesterday.

Today I tried again. No luck. Alright, I hooked up my computer to the internet directly (no router), downloaded the drivers from the website, tried to install and... no luck, my comuter simply will not install.

Anyone have any ideas as to why? BTW I tried to configure the router without the USB adapter, but again it refuses to open the exe program for the router. I tried it on my kids computer, and it opened without any problems whatsoever. But I can't configure the router from their computer cause mine is the one with the ethernet card. My computer configuration complies with the adapter and router specifications and I have plenty memory space left.

I really have no idea what the problem is.

Thanks for any responds to help.

I am by no means an expert but do you have an anti-virus program running on your computer? Sometimes the antivirus prevents exe programs from executing. Try disabling the antivirus program and try it again. Of course, don't forget to re-enable it when you're done:)

I've been "lurking" on this one. I'd bet on the virus protection software myself. 2 people already suggested it before I read the question. Spybot Search and Destroy has an option that locks the registry so that changes can't be made without clicking an OK

I imagine that after the drivers are installed there will be other problems as there will be 2 networks on one computer the internet and then the wireless (home lan) Microsoft's Internet Connection Sharing or ICS is very problematic. I have the same setup except I ran cabling, not wireless. Wireless LANs aren't as fast as my hardwired one. To share the internet I had to use a proxy server.

Hopefully we hear back if it was the virus protection or not.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I disabled norton and tried again. No luck. I hadn't thought about Spybot though. I'll try that tonight. Maybe I should also disable ZoneAlarm?

A colleague (from the IT dep.) suggested today I should reset my computer with system repair to the settings of a week ago. I'll look into that too. First thing he said was the virus protection too, but he added some spyware can do the same thing. He also suggested I should try to run the set up of other hardware/software to see if they will run.

Thanks again, I'll keep you updated on my progress :)

Zonealarm standard shouldn't stop you from launching an exe file. It might stop it from going out on the web until you allow it.

Was your computer infected before all of this?

Can you use the cd for other things, music, other data discs. You replaced the player, did you install the new cable or put it back into the box? The cable could be bad if the cd player is inaccessible. Some plugs are physically reversible even though electrically they are not.

Digging deeper when the computer first turns on it goes through an inventory does it ID the cd player? This is the BIOS starting up it has to see the hard drives and cd player.

If you disable the antivirus and the spyware and the zonealarm disconnect yourself form the net first.
