Need beginner workout for my Mom. Ideas?

My mom (60) needs a beginner workout that is simple and quick enough that she can squeeze it in each day. She borrowed some silly "Shapely Secrets in 7" DVD's from her sister, but I think she can find something more effective than that. I think anything Cathe has would be too hard. Does anyone have suggestions for a good "starter" workout? Maybe something that incorporates some light handweights along with some cardio? Thanks!

I would recommend probably a Denise Austin video. She has great starter workouts in my opinion...fit and light is what it is called - or something like that. Check it out!

I guess it depends on how fit she is right now. I am 63 and just finished p90x lean. Maybe she can do some of cathe's weight work but just use real light weights to start like 3 or 4 lbs. She could do the squats without weight maybe and just do what she can and forget the rest. I think college video has some senior workout stuff also.

I recommend the Leslie Sansone workouts if your mom is a beginner. I think some of them have a band or something for resistance. I gave some to my mom years ago and she really liked them.

Cathe does have a step, ball and hand weights (I think it has a band as well) that you can get from Walmart/Target. It includes her basic step and body scultping dvd's. My sister got it and said it was really good and basic beginner level. A step routine, plus a weight routine using light weights, and all the other stuff for about $60.00.

Have you considered something like Leslie Sansone's walking DVD's? She has a huge variety to choose from and some of them incorporate a band and/or light hand weights. I used her DVD's when I was getting back into exercise after 2 years of not working out. I'm 52 and I still use them periodically because I can't do step or kickboxing. Debbie Rocker and Madeleine Lewis also have some good walking workouts. Good luck!

And THIS coming from a woman who says SHE HATES CARDIO! :7

I would recommend the beginner Cathe stuff, Leslie Sansone, or if she is really really a beginner or has some medical issues, try the Conductorcise workouts. They are workouts to classical music with a conductor, making sweeping arm movements. (You can even buy the baton to hold.) To make it more intense, you can make the movements bigger, bend your knees more and bounce up on your toes. Or it can be done sitting down if even that is too much in the beginning. I got it for my parents and in-laws and they seem to like it.

Here's a link:

Collagevideo.com also has the first one if you prefer to order from them.

Hope that helps!

I'm not as old as your mom but I am in my 50s. I second the vote for Leslie Sansone. I started with a "Weight training for Dummies workout", Leslie Sansone and Kathy Smith (Functional Fitness). Kathy also has a basic step DVD that includes weight training. I think that would be a good second step for her. Leslie Sansone is great for someone just getting started.

What about Charlene Prickett? She's a little older as well, but alway made decent workouts. Easy to follow, shows some different levels, not too long, friendly, and I believe close to your mom's age. I actually did her More Muscle/Less Fat workout when I was coming back from knee surgery and couldn't do all the Cathe jumping. The cardio's not bad, maybe a little repetitive, and easy to modify to easier or harder and very little impact. The weight portion was decent for beginner as well. I think it topped out at 10lbs, but she could always go lighter. Each half is like 10 mins. I have it on VHS, if you want it, PM me and we can work something out. You can have it just for the postage. I think alot of her stuff has been discontinued, so it may take some looking to find them.

Thanks, everyone, for your great suggestions! I ended up buying a 3 DVD Leslie Sansone set w/resistance band plus the Prevention Get Moving workout. I also found a Denise Austin DVD of mine that she might like. I may end up getting her some more of your other suggestions if I can get her in the habit of regularly working out! :)
