My New Homemade Pull Up Bars

Gayle

DH and I put these together over the weekend and they are AWESOME!!!

I found the design on the CrossFit site/forum - kudos to them. These babies are solid.

It's basically an 8' 2x8 attached to the ceiling joists (7 joists) with long lag screws, and several pieces of galvanized black pipe and fittings. I didn't tally up the cost of supplies, but I estimate that the total was somewhere around $50-$60 (I'll check the receipt). It took us about 1.5 hours to put together.

I plan to get a set of rings to add on.

OMG Gayle, these are great! I'm going to print the photos and show my husband. I need pull up bars but so far haven't found a way to put them in our workout room. Thanks for sharing!

Oh, how cool! I think I'll try doing that too. The door option doesn't work for my SO because he's too tall!

Thanks for sharing.

You are welcome! I've been trying for sometime to find a pull up bar solution for our house because the ceiling in the gym is rather low, 83", and most of the "pull up towers" are 82" or taller.

These work out to be a really good height for DH and I. We're both about 5'6". We were amazed at how easy they were to build and at how sturdy they are.

What a great idea! I will be showing this picture to my DH as well. I don't think he'll have a problem putting it up. Your workout room looks great.

What a fantastic idea! Oh man, I wish I had some place where I could put up a bar like that! I need a basementx(

Well aren't you just special!

Yes, I'm jealous that you have a nifty set up of a workout room while I have to go to my dank basement and scrape the dust of my weights (which accumulates daily!) and watch for the occasional insect while pouring in sweat. And no, I have no place to put a flippin' pull up bar SO THERE! ;) ;)

Ahem...sour grapes, anyone? ;-) ;-)

If it makes you feel better, I pinched the tip of my finger when we were putting the 2x8 up and now it has a nasty looking blood blister on it. :p

And another thing...

...I also have DOMS from doing pull ups...or the things that kind of look like half pullups/half convulsions. }( }(
