My mom update

Thank you for all your paryers.

My mom didn't have a stroke. She fell while getting ready for bed Tuesday evening and clobbered her head. She is an extreme creature of habit, and when she didn't stop at the news stand to pick up her papers by Wednesday evening, the shopkeeper got worried. He didn't know where she lived, but knew her mechanic. (It's a small town.) The mechanic knew how to get into the house and they found her in the bathroom. They called 911 and she ended up in ICU, almost in renal failure due to severe dehydration. (Drink your water ladies.) So now she is home, with my sister and I caring for her for a week or so.

The only changes suggested for her to make are no alcohol, which may be the cause of her fall, and that she wear her Life Line (one those automatic push button emergency call things) all the time, instead of taking it off for bed, which is what we think she did, since we found it by the bed, not around her neck.

Thank you for all your prayers. Maybe I will meet some of you at the next roadtrip. For now, I'm going to check out all the non roadtrip posts. And I brought some Cathe tapes with me to work out with here, so I'm there in spirit!

Glad your mom is OK. Sorry you missed the roadtrip, but you wouldn't want to be anywhere else anyway.

Keep us posted.

Thank God your Mom is OK. Hopefully there will be other roadtrips for us to go on so we can all meet. Hang in there and let us know what's going on.

Isn't that great about the newsstand guy and the mechanic. How touching. I'm so glad that it wasn't a stroke and I hope your mom is better soon.

Robin,

Glad it wasn't a stoke that is wonderful news. But do convince her to wear that lifeline all the time, even when she's in the shower if it's not a water-proof one, to have so if she falls, it's still in reach. This you may have to play around with, and sit in the bottom of the shower, like you’ve fell, and figure out what you can grab and what you can’t. Most people don’t think of this, they just put it *close* and close doesn’t always help.

But you may want to think about getting her the bracelet/watch one, as the ones on the long chain, if she moves a lot at night, can get caught and cause her to suffocate. There's been some controversy over that here, of those long chains doing that, and have actually killed a few people, others have been able to rescue themselves. Which maybe the reason your mother takes it off when she goes to bed.

Do make sure when it hangs on her, it is above her breasts, like were most necklaces stop. Any lower, the more chance it can get caught on things it shouldn't. If she's got arm problems can can't left them that high, or if you think she gets hurt and won't be able to lift them, then do get her the watch/bracelet or even make it out of the necklace, she currently has, this will depend on her contract with the company, as sometimes you own the little box, and sometimes you don't.

But older women are very prone to renal failure when they fall and no one is there to help them, and they get dehydrated, alcohol makes you dehydrate even faster as it can fire up the liver to 120 degrees or better. What’s bad is when they are embarrassed for people to find them, and try to hold #1 and #2 and fight with the body not to let it out, that can do a lot of damage as in the renal area.

But I’m very glad to hear that your mother is okay, and you and your sister are there to take care of her. As well as that two people who notice she was missing and decided to go looking for her, she was a very lucky lady.

Hi Robin,

So glad to hear it wasn't a stroke afterall. It's all nice to see how the small town folks take care of each other.

Don't forget to take care of yourself also.
