My 40 year old brother had a TIA

It's been a long weekend. Friday am I got a call that my brother was taken to the hospital with R sided weakness, headache and memory loss. Of course the signs of a stroke. He was stat flighted from the local hospital after almost 3 HOURS (should have been sooner!!) to a big stroke center. Luckily just before they stat flighted him he became himself again, so they are calling it a transient ischemia attack (tia). It looks like he has suffered no permanent damage- thank God. They still don't know what caused this in a 40 year old healthy man (scarey). He had been feeling bad since before christmas and had even just had a CT scan of his head.

It was awful seeing him in this situation and just the look in his eye. He knew exactly what was going on, but he was aphasic and could'nt communicate his thoughts correctly. He is afraid it's gonna happen again. Unfortunatley he lives alone and that worries us all. He is too stubborn to stay with anyone else or let someone stay with him.

Just say some prayers for him and hope this doesn't happen again.

thanks

Catherine -
I'm really sorry to hear about your brother - how terrible! If he's fit and healthy otherwise, do you think it could be stress? I sure hope he plans to have a thorough medical evaluation.

(I've been advised to have the same thing - got quite a post going on over the weekend! :) )

This reminds me of what happened to my dad about 4 years ago. Of course, he's about 15 years older than your brother. He races motocross and was in-between the practices, getting ready for the first race. A friend came by, saw him just sitting there, and knew something was wrong. Ends up my dad couldn't remember who he was, where he was, nothing. They took him to the nearest hospital. At first they thought it was a TIA, but then, after further evaluations (MRI's, etc., after the event), it was determined to be some sort of electrical storm or shortout in the brain. It happened a few times after that, but not nearly as bad. My dad was under an extreme amount of stress at the time, and having a tough time coping with the fact that my brother had just become paralyzed.

I'm keeping your brother in my thoughts and hope for his full recovery.

Catherine, how scary!!! Your brother seems awfully young to have such problems! I'll definiteky keep him in my prayers and hope this doesn't happen again. Hopefully, his doctors will be able to get to the bottom of why this happened.

Oh Shannon, Catherine I have you both in my thoughts, prayers.

I know about this first hand. When my son was 15 I dropped him off at football practice and he had a full blown seizure, EMT, ER, CTScan, MRI the whole bit. He was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm and we also discovered siezure disorder. So I know first hand how anything effecting the brain can be.

Catherine - hugs to your and your brother.

I'll keep him in my prayers. Remember Bruschi had a stroke and he was a top NFL player and he came back.

Catherine-I am so sorry to hear this happened. How scary! I can only imagine. I will pray for your brother and family.

Thanks all for your well wishes for my brother. I just have a feeling he's gonna come out fine.

Shannon,
I hope your dad and brother are both doing ok. I don't think my brother is under any tremdous stress, but these days who knows.

Robyn,
How is your son? Did everything workout ok for him??

Catherine

Catherine,

I am so sorry to hear that this happened to your brother. Very scary.
I hope that they will be able to find out what caused this and that he will be OK. I will keep you, your brother and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Catherine, a few years ago this happened to my boss and I was with him at a meeting when he had it - same as your brother, no permanent damage. He was 43 at the time. Obviously this scared him and he immediately began an exercise program, changed his diet, etc. He is now 54 and has not had another incident. They discovered his cause was high blood pressure but he hadn't had a check up in a long time so didn't know he had a problem, but like your brother had gone a period of time of not feeling well.

Hopefully they will find the cause so that they can prevent future occurrences and insure his good health. I hope he improves quickly! :)
