Muscle Sculpting vs Muscle Toning

Stacy

Cathlete
Lately in my reading I've come across the terms "muscle sculpting" and "muscle toning" as being two different entities with two different means of achieving them. I'm not sure I totally understand the difference. Any thoughts??

Thanks,

Stacy

IMHO, there's far less of a difference than fitness frauds would have you believe. In fact, I hate both of those terms because they focus on the aesthetics of muscle conditioning rather than the strength development and mass development of muscle conditioning.

Focus on strength development, shooting for progressively heavier weight loads while maintaining your cardio program (also shooting for progressively challenging cardio routines, which strength development will assist in), and don't worry about mickey-mouse catch-phrases like "sculpting" and "toning".

Just my $.02 -

IMHO, I agree with Aquajock most of the time these terms are used in an affort to attract women to classes using weights in gym classes or on machines.

Probably coming from the fact that many women (myself included until recently) think that if they use weights they are going to bulk up into the a female hulk without the green skin.

My 2cents worth

I agree with Aquajock also. I hate when they use those terms because I never know exactly what they mean. I also hate it when they generalize and speak as if everybody have the same goals or the same body type. I hate infomercials that say: "Trim your hips" or "Get a slimmer, slick lower body" or whatever, as if all women were the same.

Hmmm!

I guess I'm in the minoriy here. Of course this could be because I've taught cardio and "muscle toning" classes for years and have just never changed the term to "strength work". I myself think that most, (women especially) would be more attracted to the term toning then strength work thinking strength work would bulk them up, when in reality, it is the SAME thing. I think it's just a difference in words not meaning. Sooo, Stacy, my opinion is that it is the SAME thing. (Keep in mind this is coming from a gal who is ALMOST a 1/2 century old! :-wow)

How about Fitness or Shape's cover teezers that say, "Bikini Body in 6 Weeks"! I always laugh at those....then I laugh harder when I see the workouts!

RE: Hmmm!

I believe it could benefit fitness product sales, and membership in gyms, to call it toning or sculpting because so many women ar afraid of bulking up. Eventually they may learn that it is just bogus propaganda, but meanwhile, they are lifting some weights.

But has anyone ever wondered what they would do if suddenly they woke up one morning and had "bulked up" too much? (As if you just wake up one day and suddenly it's like a sci fi movie and you look like a cheap drag queen)

Well, since you asked :), I'll tell you what I would do, I would just lay off the weights for a week or two. Woohoooo! Problem solved. What is the big fat hairy deal here??

RE: Hmmm!

Honeybunch..

I get a good laugh out of those magazines, too. I am so into fitness and all this stuff that a year ago I ordered all these magazines..Runners World, Self, Health..I mean, you name it. And every month when they come I always think "Why in the hell did I order these stupid things." They tell ya the same thing every month. And I love all those "get fit quick" exercises you do with no weight. Yeah, right. Needless to say, the only subscription I even kinda sorta wanted to keep was HEALTH and I decided even that was not worth it. I think I get more valueable information here, free...good thing I got you to keep me informed now!!!

It happened to me!

I am one of those women. I looked at a picture of myself and I could not believe the size of my shoulders. I could have made a football player jealous. I was also getting large across the lats. My arms were increasing in size but I was getting no definition at all. I have since backed off (about a month now) and am wondering what I should do next because I don't like those huge shoulders at all.

RE: Hmmm!

Yes, but the problem is that endurance and muscle gaining are two different things and the term "toning" doesn't make it clear which one of those it is.

don't worry
>about mickey-mouse catch-phrases like "sculpting"
>and "toning".

"Mickey Mouse"! Ha! Love that!!

Another person in agreement with Annette.

All I have to say about sculpting and toning is that there is no such thing and I have to admit I'm a bit insulted by the tone and frequency in which they are used to sell all manner of fitness merchandise (now that I know better, that is :) ).

There is endurance-strength work and there is muscle fiber-building work. And there are different ways you can vary your strength routine (i.e. super sets, drop sets, etc.)

My 2 cents.
:)
