morning, noon and night sickness!

Beets

Cathlete
Hello All,
It's Beets again. Well, the morning sickness has finally kicked in--except that it is all day sickness at this point. I am actually a little better off in the morning and then get progressively worse as the day goes on. I have not gotten so sick that I had to vomit yet but sometimes I wish I would just to get the feeling over with. My appetite has been non-existant this week. I have been living on cereal, soup, ginger ale and tomato products--the wee one seems to love tomato stuff which is a good thing b/c it is my fave! I just got my prenatal vitamins and heard that they can make you sick as well--Great! One of my clients figured out that something was wrong with me by looking at my face so I fessed up and told her that I might be this way for a few more weeks. How is everyone else doing out there? I hear that the morning sickness usually subsides about week 12 so I only have 5 more wonderful weeks to go! Wish me luck!

Hi Beets,
Sorry to hear that you are feeling so lousy. I had very bad morning sickness (24 hour sickness) with all three of my pregnancies - it is so miserable! Glad you are at least able to find some foods that agree with you.
With my current pregnancy (I'm 31 1/2 weeks), my ob recommended potato chips to relieve the nausea. She said the salt/fat combo helps some women. I am not a chip eater, but I tried it and it did help but only temporarily. I found that pizza helped a little also (another high salt/fat food). But each pregnancy is different - this may not work for you and I certainly don't want to encourage you to try something that will make you sick! I have found with each pregnancy different foods have helped or made things worse - sounds like you are doing the same.
I hope that the nausea ends at 12 weeks for you, but don't be discouraged if it doesn't! Some women are sick for the entire pregnancy. I was sick until about week 20 with all of mine and I still have strong food aversions and some slight nausea at times.
I know there are wrist bands that you can buy that may help with nausea - I never tried them, but have heard good things about them. Maybe that is something you could try if you feel really awful?
Hope you feel better soon. And, on a positive note, I always tried to look at the morning sickness as a sign that the pregnancy was going well. But I know when you feel that lousy, it's sometimes hard to care!
Take care!
Erica

The only thing that helped me - ginger tablets! They are fantastic for travel sickness and work well for morning sickness.

I've also found weak peppermint tea soothing for an upset tummy.

Hang in there Beets and take it day by day!

Cheers,
Liz N

Thanks for the support! Actually, it was funny that the first poster (sorry, could not remember the name) mentioned pizza to soothe nausea. Last night, I had the wickedest craving for cheese pizza. My dear husband obliged and went out and picked up a small pizza for the two of us. It was heaven on earth! It helped a little and I actually did not feel sick this morning when I got up. However, about 3 hours later, the nausea came back and has been here since. We are going out to dinner tonight with some friends and I hope I will be okay. WE are going for Italian of course since that is about all I seem to be able to handle. Thanks again for the replies!

Hi Beets!

Just joining in to wish you luck that the sickness passes. Having morning sickness, day, noon & night is NOT fun. It is like having the Flu. I know! I had it with both my kids for nine months! x( Saying a prayer yours goes away soon. I also heard that ginger is very good for nausea. Plain chicken broth helped me a bit. (like the Lipton Cup of Soups) If Italian helps, EAT IT!!! Have fun with your friends tonight and hope dinner tastes good to you. Keep us posted.

“Morning” sickness

This really is the pits, isn’t it? I had it BAD for much of my first 3 months then it magically stopped after the 3 month scan. I did actually vomit a few times - not pleasant at all and felt very sorry for myself. DH and I got much closer during these episodes as he held plastic bags for the “deed”- too much detail there! I think for most women it does ease after the first trimester.

What really helped me was bread, bread, bread. Fresh, plain wholewheat bread really really helped but got boring after a while. Anytime I smelt/ate fried food I felt sick to the depths of my soul ! I remember one morning wanting to eat spicy rice and feeling sick all day having had it - I NEVER repeated that again! I’m 17 weeks now and no sickness at all, although greasy foods still aren’t a good idea. Even now, fresh bread settles my tum like nothing else.

Good luck - it will get better, my love! And I really think it’s worth it for a healthy baby!

RE: “Morning” sickness

Hi Beets-

I feel your pain.. I barfed my way through the first 6 months of my pregnancy. High salt foods helped me alot.. I lived on wonton soup, potato chips, and processed turkey deli meat!!... Nothing like a big bowl of wont ton soup at 7 am to set you right for the world!!!

Also, try to avoid bad smells. I am sure you have noticed your sense of smell is heightened.

Oh I did try the wrist bands.. it didn't do anything for me. But I have heard it helps some people.

Hang in there.. I thought the morning/all day sickness was 100 times worse than the rest of the pregnancy!!

Take care,
Lynn

My heart goes out to you... I'm pg with my second and am finally over the second round of morning sickness. Don't be discouraged if certain remedies aren't working. What may work one day will have the opposite effect the next! :) Here are a few things I tried with occasional success to help minimize my morning sickness:

-- try to exercise in the morning, sometimes it helped with my nausea
-- eat/drink anything with ginger: cookies, candy (look at your health food store), chinese food, or tea
-- stay away from heavy, greasy foods and ESPECIALLY any foods that have offensive odors to you right now (for me it's hamburger meat and any form of potatoes)
-- takes naps if you can, or get lots of sleep at night
-- put that broom down! I mean, don't worry if your house is a total wreck. Stressing about my house seemed to make me more ill. But I promise it will look better later on :)
-- Ask your OB/midwife first, but I sometimes used a homeopathic remedy called "nux vomica" that is very safe and gentle. It even helps with indigestion. Check your local health food store.
-- Don't sweat it if you can't eat anything other than crackers and soup. Dr. Andrew Weil has written that many health experts hypothesize that this is the pregnant body's way of avoiding harmful toxins that may be found in food. Take your prenatals and you'll be fine.

This is probably redundant advice but it worked for me. Good luck and I hope in my heart of hearts that you'll feel better after the first trimester. :)
