Make Over TV shows

Does anyone here like them? ( Ambush makeover, What not to wear, Look a like, How do I look ...etc) I have a love- hate reationship with them. They seem a bit insulting to me. Imagine that you are walking down the street and someone comes up to you and say you need a makeover. I would be so insulted. How dare they? Then again, if truth be told, some people do need a reality check.

The worst make over show for me would be TV Guide's look alike. Why would people consent to look like movie star when they can be themselves is beyond me. It seems so dumb and silly? Why? Why? Why?

What really gets me about these TV shows is that when someone gets a makeover, they look worse than they did before. Professional stylists do not always know best. They just know style, but style and personality go hand in hand.

Also, some people with the trashiest style have the nerve to tell you that you need a makeover. What's up with that? What do you guys think about these shows.

I love em all for the entertainment value. You really have to not think too much into these shows. If someone offered me a 5000 visa to replace my wardrobe you can flash me like a bad 80s wannabe, baby.

Well, true confessions, waterlily, I am a What Not To Wear fanatic. I have no idea why, but I just can't get enough of that show. As for that lookalike show that you mentioned, I couldn't agree more and would not dream of watching it. But WNTW is an obsession, and apparently will so remain, because I've been watching it for a long time. I can now walk down the street and look at strangers thinking "wrong neckline", "perfect jewelry", "wrong waistline", "perfect length" and on and on and on. I do it without even noticing! I'm not sure I'm as good at knowing what's best for myself as I am at knowing what's best for others, though. I think I dress more for my mood than for what really works.

Debbie, I have to disagree with you here. No one would be able to convince me to take a 5000 Visa to say thay I look bad. Then throw away my clothes --- hell no!! These things cost money!!!!

Is someone passing out $5000 VISAs? I'm shoving my way to the front of the line dragging a garbage bag (or two) of my clothing behind me.

See, I'd pay big bucks to get a new wardrobe and know that I look good in all the stuff. I can't necessarily vouch for all my stuff now....I mean, come on, isn't a spongebob squarepants holiday shirt RED HOT???? WHOOOOOT!!!!

"I mean, come on, isn't a spongebob squarepants holiday shirt RED HOT???? WHOOOOOT!!!!"

Well, as a big Spongebob fan, I'd have to say yes, Deb. :D

P U L E A S E!!!!

Like I'm going to listen to someone tell me what not to wear!!! Who died and made these people the rulers of the earth?!?

I believe everyone should have their own style :)

What HAVEN'T I learned from Stacy, Clinton, Trinny & Susannah?

I've learned:

-which jewelry is right for my bone structure
-which neckline is best for my bust size
-how to balance the proportions of my body through clothing
-which shoes work best for my ankles and my pant legs
-how to mix and match pieces I never dreamed of putting together before
-how a jacket can make my legs look longer
-how a syle of pants can make my hips look smaller
-which tops make my waist look longer
-which colors work best for my complexion
-and, most of all, how to make my waist look smaller! (my biggest problem area)

I don't always follow all the rules, but at least I know what to do when I want to!

I LOVE What Not to Wear!! It's the only reality show I have ever watched. I think it's great and I agree with Nancy that there is much people can learn about how to dress for their shape. Many people simply don't realize that they aren't dressing properly for their body type.

I've never heard of the other shows mentioned in the original post.

I completely agree with you, Nancy! I love that show! In fact, when I tell people what I used to weigh a year ago (I'm 5'1" and was 148 lbs...I'm now 116) they can't believe it. They always say "You didn't look like you carried that much weight". I tell them that was because I learned how to camouflage it, quite expertly, and it was all thanks to Stacy and Clinton. Now, as my shape and size has changed, I still find myself picking up great pointers on necklines and proportions and now have the confidence to add much more vibrant color in unexpected ways. I think of WNTW as a "how to" show lol.

I love WNTW! I also used to watch Fashion Emergency on the E! channel with Emie (or however she spells her name). One big hint I got from both shows is to wear clothes that fit - don't try to hide under big shirts, pants, etc. That stuff just makes you look bigger.

IMHO, those very same things can be learned by looking at one's reflection in the mirror. But I am one that wouldn't dream of hiring an interior decorator. I want my style reflected in my home just as I want my style reflected in what I wear.

It may be a challenge at times but when I've combined things that look good, either on myself or in my home, I get so much satisfaction in the outcome. I love being creative in those areas. And when people come into my home and compliment me or appreciate what I am wearing...it makes me really so good!

That satisfaction and enjoyment would be taken away from me if I looked to someone else for their so called expertise.

I can't stand Stacy & Clinton. It annoys me no end that they keep trying to put women in super high heels with pointy toes. Sooooooo bad for the feet!! x(

I love Trinny & Susannah, though. They could make me over any day.

I don't mind these shows as much as the 'reality' shows totally bug the &*%# out of me!!! Them and the ever-increasing knock-offs!!! You can't watch any channel without them coming up with some reality knock-off show. At least the makeover shows don't have the sophmoric drama going on!!!
