Low Thryoid

My husband and I went for our annual physicals last week and yesterday the Dr. called with the results of my blood labs.

He said I have low thyroid, the range is 0.30 to 5.50 and mine is 9.96, so I will be taking 50 mcg of levothyroxine daily and have my blood retested in 2 months. I'm glad the finally have a Dr. that listened when I spoke. I told him that I don't have the energy that I use to have especailly for working out and I am having a hard time losing weight even though I eat pretty well. I just figured that since I'll be 50 in May that maybe age was the reason, although I will have to say that for probably the last 6 months or so my craving for starch has risen dramatically. I have always love mashed potatoes with gravy and pasta, I can eat a box of pasta without anything on it and be happy!!

I have had thyroid problems for years. It is not all in your mind and it is not because of your age, if you are really feeling fatigued it is probably related to your thyroid. Tell your doctor everything and I hope you feel better.

I started taking thyroid medication years ago and had about the same level as you do now. It's taken years to get the dosage right and I'm now on .75 levoxyl (or generic form) once a day and cytomel (lowest dose don't remeber what that is though) twice a day. I didn't feel good until my thyroid level was down to 1.0 about 3 years ago and have kept it there since. It was the dose of cytomel that made all the difference for me. Everyone is sooooo different, it's hard to say what will work for you. Mary Shomon is a great resource for thyroid issues. You can find her website at http://thyroid.about.com/ and she has a couple great books out that are worth checking out.
