low carb question

I am thinking about trying the akins for life diet. It really seems like a diet that make complete sense to me. I know there are many issues and opinions with this diet, but I still have to find out for myself. I have heard that people have a loss of energy when first beginning this diet. But, if one was to start a low calorie diet, wouldn't they find a lack of energy as well? Wouldn't cutting calories do the same thing to one's energy level as opposed to cutting carbs?

Just wondering.....

Hi Sara, I have tried low carb and did experience low energy. My energy was low at one point, I was taking naps and I very rarely ever takes naps. This does not happen to me with cutting calories. From what I have heard carbs are your energy foods, so if you cut them you feel tired. I could be wrong, but that is what I've heard.

a friends expeierence was similar to kelley's. yes he lost weight but he couldn't exercise let alone do his job. i agree with some points of cutting carbs like sugar and white flour etc etc. but i would defiently keep in LOTS of veggies and whole grains and wheat. its hard to find the good stuff with carbs but i eat lots of oatmeal(just plain stuff out of the carboard tube there, then i can monitor what i put in and how much) and oat bran.grape nuts cereal is a little high carb but its has a lot of fiber and protien.these are just things i try to stick with. most of my carbs come from diary, veggies, and the above sources besides the occasions junk food or weekend dinner out.

me i have lost energy trying both so i don't really count calories but try to keep up the quality of my food and portion sizes. i.e. a 10oz piece a chicken may not be a good idea over an 8oz piece and a little more veggies on my plate. i do heavy workouts so i believe the quality of my food is most important to me. some days i eat more and sometimes i eat less but i keep track of that.

>Simple starches and sugars provide none of the health benefits of whole grains that are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals. For a healthier diet, choose complex carbohydrates from fruits, vegetables and grains close to their original form. Refined carbs are OK in small amounts, particularly for active people who can afford the empty calories, but don't make them the bulk of your carbs (pun intended). Emerging evidence finds that people who eat too few whole grains and too many refined carbohydrates are at an increased risk of diabetes.<

Hello Sara,

My experience with Atkins was quite different. I felt fantastic. Lots of energy - never hungry - and I was so happy that the plan allowed foods that are normally cheat type foods - ie cheeses and cuts of meat like bacon, ribs, wings etc.
I managed to lose 25lbs on the diet and never really felt like I was on a diet.

I was able to lose weight bc I don't really have a sweet tooth. I like more savoury food.

But having said all that - I couldn't maintain the lifestyle - there came a time when I needed to grab something quick - like a sandwich on whole wheat - (I was studying and was at the library all the time) - or other times - I was just sick of eating so much meat - and had a pasta - Within 6 months I gained the weight back.

In terms of energy - I had more energy on Atkins - than on say - Weight Watchers or other reduced calorie plans. It just didn't work for me in the longterm.

Hope this helps - Yve

I've eaten in the low carb style for almost 2 years now and have never felt lethargic or anything. It just depends on the person. I say try it--if you experience anything negative you can stop. The beauty of it is that it's not expensive like other plans, so you won't have a lot of money invested in it if you don't care for it.
