Little house on the praire question

I used to watch Little House on the Prairie all the time when I was little. Does anyone know what the purpose of the kids wearing the caps at night when they slept? Was this a common thing during those times? I'm not really sure where this question came from but I've always wondered.

My guess was that in those times they didn't have central heat and air, so maybe those hats were for keeping thier heads warm!

I think those are the two basic reasons. DH wears nightcaps; he shaves his head and it gets cold in the winter.

The LHotP books are my favorite series of all time. I still read them. Wasn't on fire about the tv series though. Pa didn't have a beard and that's just WRONG.

I don't remember the exact percentage but it's been said that we lose (~70%??) of our body heat through our heads ... that's why we should wear hats in the winter, and why people used to wear stocking hats to bed when homes were heated with fireplaces or a wood stove ... it helps to keep you warmer.
