Kathryn: re P90X and the music... r/o

Hi Kathryn,

I don't see a new P90X thread started here, so I'm posting my own thread (hope that's ok).

Here is the question I asked you in the Video forum:

Interesting thread!

I was reading on another board, that the P90X series has "electric guitar ROCK music". Is this true? I was thinking about trying out the upper body workouts of this series, just to see if I can add on to some of the Cathe S&H upperbody splits, but IF P90X has "rock music", that's a no go for me. I've gotta have the high energy/techno that most Cathe dvds have, or I'll totally NOT be able to get into the workout. I've never been into Rock music at all--ever, let alone any hard electric guitar type rock. Sad, that the music is so important to me, but it is. The music has got to make me want to dance/move. And Rock won't get me there at all.

Also, I read that this series has a ton of pushups. Is this so? That would be another reason for me to not go with the series. I have implants, and while I'm willing to do a few modified pushups (or even maybe try a full one), I don't want a ton of them, that I'll just end up skipping over.

I'm guessing that P90X just won't be for me. Am I right?

I wanted to add that in addition to music, "voices" also are important to me. There are some instructors I just cannot stand to workout to. I don't like overly chatty or "annoying" type voices. lol I just can't focus on the workout. I think that's another reason I'm so drawn to Cathe. She has high energy music with a beat that keeps me pumping, and her voice is "cute and sweet", not dry or lacking in personality. Yet, she's not over the top with pep or chattiness. How does the P90X series trainer compare? I think I also read that some found him a bit annoying. How do you feel about his style of training, compared to Cathe?

I wish I weren't so affected by sound, but I really am. I have friends who couldn't care less what's being said. They can focus regardless of the instructor or anyone else's antics. I can't at all. Some also turn the volume off. I too can't do that. lol

Should I pass on this series? and if so, can you give me another rec for a diff instructor for mass building arm/shoulder workouts, to add to Cathe's?

thanks!

I don't blame you, music is key for me. I was apprehensive to preorder the new cathe without knowing what the music would be. I have been reading over the p90x site over and over. I wish they had video clips, so you could get a sense of what it's like.
Just for curiosity sake why can't you do push ups with implants?
Heather

My doctor never said I couldn't, but she did tell me that when they are "under the muscle" (as mine are), I shouldn't go too heavy. Most female bodybuilders have "over the muscle" implants. The muscle doesn't exert the pressure (squeezing) over the implant, and it looks much better when the pecs are contracted. But aesthetics aside during workouts, lol, my main worry is that I'll POP one, if I lift too heavy or do too many pushups. I had a co-worker have one pop, and at the time, she was doing a chest workout. So, I'm leary....

IF P90X has "rock music", that's a no go for me.

I don't think of it as "rock" really. It's heavy in guitare, a bit jazzy. Not what I'd usually use for working out (I prefer instrumental techno with a heavy beat) but it doesn't bother me at all. It's rather nondescript, and I couldn't hum it after finishing the workout. There is a "music off" option, so you can always turn off the music and use your own (a nice feature if you dont'like the music).

>Also, I read that this series has a ton of pushups.

The "Chest/Back" workout is mostly push-ups and pull-downs.

Tony is very different from Cathe. SOmetimes goofy (but there is a "cues only" option on the workouts as well, so they edit out some of his goofy talk--I actually like it and consider him like a goofy brother.) He's motivating, gives lots of modification tips, encourages, but there's a bit of gym machismo about him as well in the competitive way he is with some of the background exercisers (though not to that extent...it's all in fun).

Tony is less goofy in P90X than he is in some other workout series. And he knows his stuff, so there's a smart guy behind the goofiness.

I'm not sure if there are clips available at www.beachbody.com . I know there used to be a whole on-line journal showing the progress of the production of the workouts. That can give you a taste of what Tony is like.

Some people like Cory Eversons shoulder and arms workout. But it's only on video, and she's got a very odd voice. Very "little girly" and giggly.

Thanks Kathryn!

So funny you mentioned Cory E. Is she the super super tall blonde? If so, then she's the one who has the really irritating voice, I mentioned. lol I think it's her-- I stashed the dvd away, bec I just couldn't stand working out to it. :/

I'll go over to beachbody and seach for clips.

thanks, again!
